President Obama told them to “buck up” and Vice President Joe Biden chided them to “stop whining” – and at least one leading progressive group is responding with gusto.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee is redoubling its support for a handful of liberal House and Senate candidates in the homestretch, including one incumbent whom POLITICO first sounded the alarm bells about by pointing to his potential vulnerability.

PCCC, which has been blistering in its critique of outgoing White House officials like economic adviser Larry Summers and former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel for what it saw as their roles in enabling a more centrist approach to policy, reported making 21,000 calls Tuesday night into Arizona’s 7th Congressional District for Rep. Raul Grijalva.

A poll by Magellan Data and Mapping Strategies obtained by POLITICO last week showed the four-term Democrat and Progressive Caucus chair locked in a dead heat with Republican rocket scientist Ruth McClung, prompting the PCCC to swoop in with reinforcements.

An e-mail to supporters sent Tuesday morning uses the POLITICO article to enlist dialers and encourage $3 donations.

“Grijalva is House Progressive Caucus Chairman and his opponent was just endorsed by Sarah Palin today — we cannot let him lose!” wrote PCCC co-founder Adam Green.
