Taboo-breaking Berlin exhibition chronicles Hitler's hold over German society
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 12:54 PM on 14th October 2010

The knuckle-dusters, truncheons and jackboots in the first case of a new exhibition on 'Hitler and the Germans' in Berlin sets the tone for a stark look at how German society embraced the Nazi regime in all its brutality.

While lots of memorabilia is on show, from SS and Gestapo uniforms to a sideboard from Hitler's office, the exhibition shows how all levels of German society - media, industry, the church, schools -- built up the Hitler cult in the 1930s and clung to it through World War II until defeat was imminent.

Some media have portrayed the show opening on Friday in the German Historical Museum as a taboo-breaking first exhibition on Adolf Hitler himself. But the curators are at pains to stress that their focus is on the society that created the dictator.

The poster on the left shows the different 'German races' and the one on the right warns of the dangers of
'inferior races' having more children than 'higher quality' ones

As the exhibits document the construction of the Nazi state, with its industry, autobahns and folksy celebrations of Hitler, they also reflect the growing racial hatred and discrimination.

3. A sampling of the background
George Mosse's "Nazi Culture" (1987) contains a lot of the source material from the Hitler regime. The google link is to a preview which gives some of the actual pages of the book. Fascinating, if horrifying, and much of what the Nazis did to create a culture that supported their political ends is virtually identical to what the rightwing is doing in the U.S. right now.

4. Not just the Nazis
Racial hygene wasn't an exclusively Nazi obsession back then, hell it lingered for decades after the fall of the 3rd Reich.

The Law on forced sterilization was still in effect in Sweden 30 years after WWII.

8. It is amazing how Hitler got his Swastika everywhere!

I'm starting to think that Hitler wasn't about one person, he was about a mental illness that still exists today in the mentality of the elite who truly believe they are the chosen people and feel it is their job to reduce the threat of overpopulation..through our 'food' supply, our medical 'care', as Bill Gates says 'vaccines', stealing our homes and pensions etc. They believe it is their duty to reduce our population by stepping on us all, grinding us into the ground...survival of the fittest ya know.

More on this building:

In fact it is FOUR buildings all with 90 degree turns so the maximun number of windows could be in each building.

10. I wonder if they also put the corporations who help build the nazi machine
on display?

Without their help the nazi's would never have been.

12. This article is sadly typical,
It portrays the virulent hatred and anti-Semitic fury of the Germans as something that came in with Hitler. The fact of the matter is that this sort of virulent anti-Semitism was rampant, not just in Germany, but throughout much of Europe since the Middle Ages.

It was during the mid 19th century, as a result of the rise of Romanticism and other nationalist movements there was also a rise in anti-Semitism throughout the world, especially in Europe. Germany was steeped in anti-Semitic thought and action. Hitler was simply clever and charismatic enough to harness this for his own ends. But it did not originate with him, and sadly it didn't end with him.
