I was hopeful I could cover my Son on my Health Insurance |
|
He is 22 and has no insurance and only gets 10 hours a week at work. So, I find out my 2 party insurance has gone up 60.00 dollars a month, and If I added my Son and got the Family plan it would be 140.00 more a month, and my Son would not be included in the vision and Dental. I cannot afford any of this! So, if everyone is being forced to have health insurance how much will THAT cost my Son, who has NO money? Who is this Health Insurance reform helping? Insurance Companies!!!!!!!!

1. That's pretty standard for employer-based health insurance |
|
With or without HCR. Family plans are more expensive than single or 2-party plans. But before HCR, you couldn't have added him at all.

2. And that of course is so much better than what we had before. |
|
Before we weren't allowed to add our children, so they had no coverage.
Now we're allowed to, even though we can't afford to, so even though they still have no coverage, their non-coverage now is so much better than the non-coverage they used to have.

Remember how much we were shouted down when we tried to point out the GIANGANTIC loopholes in the then proposed "health care reform" law?

this 'reform' wasn't for us. They got no clue what it is really like to live a 'normal' life out here. To them these increase are pocket change and a 5-11k deductible is ok too.

Having no "coverage" now is better than not having "coverage" was before the Insurance Profit Protection Act passed?
How?

3. It's kind of like Bush and Cheney's last hurrah on their way out |
|
They let the oil companies double the price of gas but at least they sent us a check to help be able to afford gas for a couple of weeks. Our health insurance premiums increased $150 per month in early September and are supposed to go up again in February or March.
The only difference is Bush gave us a check, Obama ain't giving us shit!

5. Isn't insurance for guys, especially young guys, pretty cheap? |
|
You'd be better off just paying 60 or so for an individual insurance policy.
As far as your question about who it's helping? Well, it's helping families who are allowed to add their young adult kids for a reasonable price. You're not one of those people, but without the entire story it's hard to know why.

But I've been very pro-active and a bit lucky health-wise.

7. add up what the new total is, and have him pay 1/3 |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-14-10 04:28 PM by SoCalDem
That's sort of how we handled the auto insurance when our oldest started driving. Our total went up $XX.XX, and that's what he paid..
I know that health insurance is different, but if he has NONE, now...surely he could find a way to pay whatever the 1/3 cost is for your family policy if he cannot pay the entire increase...although it appears that 80$ extra seems to be the additional cost.. even at $10 an hour that's only $20 a week.. Look for dental schools nearby. Often they do very good work for a very low price..for vision care he could probably get an eye test fairly reasonably and with the scrip, he would order glasses online for a very reasonable price. Often the biggest cost of glasses is the frames.. Goodwill is a great place to find frames..sometimes for a few bucks.. I have even used frames from the reading glass kiosks...the $9.99 specials:)

8. Mandates don't kick in until 2014 |
|
and when that happens, the subsidies will kick in as well. If he still has no money or is low income, he will get a subsidy.
Have you priced catastrophic on the open market. If he's young with no pre-existing conditions, that is likely the cheapest route to go.

10. For most, subsidies will only cover a percentage. |
|
The rest MUST be paid out of pocket BY LAW. Some will receive no subsidy. MILLIONS (40+?) Americans will be forced by LAW into this "arrangement". ALL the Republicans have to do is sit back and say, "Yep, we opposed it".
Democrats will be unelectable for a generation.

20. What is your funding mechanism for single payer? |
|
And, no, I don't believe your doomsday scenario. I support single payer. But I think we need to be honest about the facts and resist fear mongering to build a strong case.

21. We already pay enough for Single Payer. |
|
We just don't get it. Pick a funding mechanism that works for the other 37 civilized countries that have a successful Universal Health Care program. Use the best one. We did NOT need a "Uniquely American Solution" that enthroned the For Profit Insurance Corporations as the only gateway to Health Care, We needed a solution that WORKS. There are plenty of good ones in the civilized WORLD. We should have borrowed one.
To fully appreciate how BAD the HCR Bill really is, simply compare it to what the rest of the civilized WORLD takes for granted.
As far as sharing my opinion about 2014, time will tell. There WILL be MILLIONS of unhappy Americans forced to buy a product they won't be able to use (High Co-Pays, High deductibles). They WILL blame the Democrats. Rightly so.

state's Medicaid plan (or even Children's healthcare in some states). He very likely qualifies.
