i am not a lesbian. I am just someone who wants LGBTIQ to have the same rights as me.
But people assume I am a lesbian because of my advocacy for civil rights.
And I gotta tell you, they are pretty god damned condescending when doing so.
They talk to me like LGBTIQ rights would be my only concern and identity and that I wouldn't care about any other issue.
It fuckin sucks. I have gotten a little taste of how it must be in real life for people who are LGBTIQ.
And I'm not saying this for any other reason except to point out that some people think that if this issue is important to you, you must be gay yourself because why else would it mean so much. And I think it says an awful lot about people.

1. This is too true. It just happened to me the other day. |
|
Coming Out Day to be exact. I wear my hair really short, so of course I am not above suspicion. At work, we got into a debate about gay rights and I was being called out. Since I am pretty outspoken, I let them know that it was Coming Out Day, and I damned well would come out if I had a reason. Prejudice comes in all colors, shapes and sizes.

Civil rights, equal rights are HUMAN rights. Period. I don't get why certain groups of people don't understand that, or think they can 'cherry pick' which rights they support.

because of my "Straight but not Narrow" sticker, and it also inspired road rage a couple times too.
edited to add: I think they are as freaked out by us for supporting the cause as they are by anyone who loves differently than them.

During the attempt to overturn marriage rights in Massachusetts, And more than one person commented on it, in a positive way. I needed to show my support, and it felt good. Yay me! And yay you!

5. It does suck but you are a strong person for standing up for |
|
what you believe not what is being fed to you by hate mongers.
I find that when people attack others they are weak and pathetic.
I always respond the the LGBT are tax paying, U.S loving Americans and they have every right to have equal rights in this country. It's none of anyone elses business what adults do behind closed doors.
Thanks for your support!

7. That's it, right there |

It's none of anyone elses business what adults do behind closed doors.
And the only way to end it is through the courts. A political decision can be fought against and maybe changed. But once the SCOTUS decides, its a done deal.

10. That's why I believe some don't understand it has to go |
|
to the courts and has to be overturned. The swish of pen by President Obama could easily be undone by a Repug.

11. For me, this is NOT a "LGBTIQ Issue". |
|
It is an American Civil Rights Issue. Equal Rights and Equal Protections for EVERYBODY!...NO exceptions!

12. I agree. Although some are offended with using the term civil rights |
|
when speaking of LGBTIQ rights.
It doesn't make sense to me, but there it is anyhow.

13. I am not a lesbian either... |

...but I have gay friends, and it makes me angry that their rights are denied, that they should be treated as second-class citizens. It's not just about what personally affects *us* - it's about the other people in our lives too, people whose well-being we care about (in which case it actually does affect us, after all). I dare say that all the homophobes and bigots who are making so much noise, have gay/lesbian people in their lives: family members, friends, co-workers, people they admire, whether living or historical. They may not know it. But they do.
