International Commons Conference Nov. 1-2
Commons activists gather in Berlin to explore the potential of commons-based policies

By Jay Walljasper

Commoners from around the world will gather in Berlin October 31 – November 2 for a conference to “explore the range of commons-based policy and social approaches that now exist and forge a new network of commoners who will collaborate on commons-based initiatives in the future.”

OTC Fellow David Bollier is one of the organizers of the conference, which is sponsored by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, a publicly financed non-profit organization affiliated with the German Greens, but working independently with various partners through its 25 worldwide offices.

Among the speakers scheduled are: Maude Barlow, former water advisor the United Nations Secretary General; Alberto Acosta, an economist and former President of the Constituent Assembly of Ecuador; James Quilligan, advisor to many world leaders; Rob Hopkins, founder the UK’s Transition Towns movement; Esther Mwangi, a Kenyan forestry researcher; Silke Helfich, a German commons activist who is one of the organizers of the conference; and Michel Bauwens of the P2P Foundation, and another conference organizer. An afternoon tour of Berlin-based commons projects is planned for the day before the conference, October 31.

“The simple yet powerful and complex question to be explored throughout the conference is: What does a commons-based policy framework look like? What already exists and what do we still need to develop to nurture and protect diverse sorts of commons?” said Bollier. “Over the course of two days, the conference will assess the range of existing and potential commons-based policy approaches; develop the fundamentals of a policy framework that supports the commons; and identify and explore specific strategic opportunities to advance commons-based approaches.” ........(more)
