University of Chicago Law Prof's Blog About Struggling on $250G+ Draws Fire
Edited on Sat Oct-16-10 04:15 PM by Swede
Someone making $250K and complains about Obama's tax cuts on a blog, ain't too bright.
I edited to add, that end of the story they write that they didn't add the $100k plus, that his wife makes.

Henderson usually kept his blog posts to matters of corporate law and the markets. But last week he made it personal. He posted a portrait of his family finances to make his case that those who make more than $250,000 a year are struggling, like everyone else, to make ends meet -- and people in that income bracket will see their taxes go up if Obama succeeds in his plan to extend the Bush tax cuts only for low- and middle-income Americans.

“A quick look at our family budget, which I will gladly share with the White House, will show him that, like many Americans, we are just getting by despite seeming to be rich. We aren’t,” Henderson wrote.

He said he and his wife, a doctor, paid $100,000 in federal and state taxes last year and $15,000 in property taxes. He wrote that they have a mortgage on a house they own a short distance from President Obama’s home, and they are paying off $250,000 in student loans. With an annual income of more than $250,000, he wrote, he and his wife are far from super-rich.

1. Go Fuck Yourself
Seriously dude, go crawl under a rock and leave the rest of us who are actually hurting alone. I'm not going to bother explaining why the premise behind this guys article is fucking twisted and un-American, it should be obvious.

2. 250K is well-off, not rich, by any stretch
seriously. I know it sounds like a heap of cash, but it's not really at the end of the day.

9. When you read the whole thing, and the whining about his nanny and gardner, you may think otherwise.
He's a major league gummy turd.

Posted on DU a few weeks ago; his pathetic apology is even WORSE.

20. Really? Really? Are you sticking with that argument?
Statistics from 2006 show that only 6.24% of individuals make over $100,000. Only 6.24%. Now $250,000 is 2-1/2 times that amount. Pardon me if I think you are full of it. The group earning $250,000 are a very elite group, even though they don't believe it. I guess none of us appreciate how lucky we are.

all of which is nonsense but all of our news is nonsense.

I wonder?

Maybe he needs a better tax accountant?

11. And a better financial advisor
If he's paying $100K in taxes, he'd better get some of that into a tax-free IRA or other fund. Geeze, even *I* know that!

5. Most of us don't have $250,000 in student loans.
Sympathy for those who value a college degree enough to be in that large a debt for education is nil.

Sad but true.

Education and housing makes life unaffordable.

8. his take home is 135K, about 20K would go to student loans - leaving them w 95K
A 5k a month mortgage would leave them with 35K to live on.

23. Then he needs to live on a 95K lifestyle.
If you make $250K and try to live a $350K lifestyle you won't have enough.

If you make $250K and live within your means you will have enough.

Even better if you live on less than your salary and put aside 10% your labor will last a lifetime.

All you have illustrated is he doesn't have sufficient income to support $5K mortgage. Why not a $2K mortgage or rent?

13. Anyone struggling on $250k a year is an idiot
There is simply no other explanation. Struggling with too much McMansion, too many new cars, full service health care, nanny, gardener, and taxes. This is just another "let the poor eat cake" assholes who doesn't understand why people would get upset when he says it.

Coming from someone who doesn't struggle that much on 1/20 his salary.

no way

I don't see the actual link to his finances that the article mentions.

I would love to take a look at them.

I would love to see how this guy manages to waste $250k a year.

Even if he did pay that much (I doubt it too) it would still leave him ample income to live on. So much left that only a fool could still be struggling.

34. I know many mid class people in LA who have gardener/maid. Cook would be the luxury
Almost noone I know with a house does their own yard anymore. Many have a maid or pay for maid service a few times a year. I wouldn't call any of them rich or even upper mid class. these services became standard years ago when the cost dropped substantially (immigrant labor).

Wealth not STUCK at the top, like now

Gov spending paid folks.. cash to buy products of factories...keeping them open.

I note the OP guy works where milton Friedman worked. Friedman also said insane things. What's gone haywire in chicago? Used to be a LW town.
