Is "MAN UP" and "Put your man pants on" sexist?
How should a man react to those comments from a woman? Get the old club out?

13. Only if "You aren't acting very lady like" is also sexist
I'm being sarcastic. But in all seriousness a woman who says that to a man in a public forum while debating shouldn't then turn around and act like a victim when someone calls her a whore.

But I'd love to see a man rejoinder with "I put my man pants on every morning ma'am. One foot at a time like everyone else" because the audience will laugh and he'll win that point and she'll know she just lost a point.

I consider them more of a man-to-man kind of slight. Not exactly what you'd call an insult.

But from a woman, I'd question her motives. She WOULD be trying to insult me.

23. So if a man says this to
you, it's OK...but if a woman says it, you're pissed. Do you see the double standard? The sexism of that comment?

I'm amazed at how touchy the dudes get just over a simple 'Man up.' To me that just means, 'Take responsibility for your actions.

Just on this tread, I've read about 'go get a tampon' (:wtf: ) and 'Bitch.'

Tell me to 'Woman Up.' All it means to me is...'Be responsible for your deeds.'

Just one more thing so I can really get on the Leftie boyz nerves....Don't you find it amazing how the repugnants stand up for their women candidates???? Even big fat ugly Karl Rove got spanked the day after Angle was elected in the primary. He had called her a joke and the next day, after he got the memo, he apologized and has stood strong by her. This is an observation that many political analysts have made and noted.

Many of the Leftie boyz like to call their Dem women, bitches....just look back at the Primary of '08. And 'bitch' is relatively 'kind.'

Gee, I wonder how many more I can add to my Ignore List.

42. OK, not all men - about 80%
And NO, the statement doe NOT mean 'Take responsibility for your actions'

It means 'Act more macho. Do stupid things and treat women like dirt'.

I forgive you, though. You obviously don't spend much time in the company of large numbers of men who think that they are out of earshot of women.

43. No, I try to keep my distance from
large groups of dudes.

Then why in the hell would Angle say 'Man Up?' Well, I've often said she is a Self-Hating Misogynist. Guess I was right.

When I get pissy, I say to myself....'Be a Woman.' And I get what has to be done, done.

Each generation changes the meanings of words/phrases, I guess.

I use the phrase, "Put your big-boy panties on" for men and "Put your big-girl panties on" for women. Equal time for those who need to step up to the plate, suck it up, etc.

28. You better be close to those people... friends...
If my boss or co-worker said that shit, I would be very much up in their grill, physically and legally. Friends are one thing. This was a political debate.

What next... calling somebody a "pussy" in a national debate? That's what "man up" means... be a man. Reid is a man.... whether you like his actions or not.

If Reid had responded by telling her she was just PMSing, it would have been on the same level.

These broads (I'm female)are told to do this to get a reaction and then they can play the poor, little girl who gets so upset by the mean old man. By the way, when bimbo asked Biden if she could call him Joe, he should have said "no--I'm not familiar with you".

Implying a lack of manhood if the man does not agree to do what this particular woman wants.

Or nagging mother-in-law. Seriously. I'm all for women being equal to men, and I'd scream like hell if a male politician told a woman he was running against to "put on her big-girl panties". But, for a woman to say that to a man sounds castrating. Which is, of course, the point. But it does more damage to the woman than to the man.

48. Plenty of DUers have said that Reid should "grow a pair".
I'd put that in the same category -- using gender-specific language to refer to something (courage, fortitude, gumption, whatever) that's not specific to one gender.

Other DUers have made the same point just as well by urging Reid to show some backbone. After all, it's easy enough to say that Reid and Pelosi should both have more backbone in dealing with the Republicans, but it would be jarring to urge them both to grow a pair.

I suppose "Man up" is shorter and punchier than "Take responsibility" or "Act like a leader" but I'd still prefer to avoid unnecessarily gender-specific language.

49. Yes, I think it is -- and in both directions.
Especially from a woman to a man, it's "emasculating."

However, it's all based on the old idea that being strong in any way is all about being masculine -- having "a pair," having "balls," not being a "pussy," etc...
