Modesto Bee issues 'hope-filled but cautious' endorsement for Meg Whitman
California is clearly at a crossroads.
Its economy, the eighth largest in the world, is in disarray, plagued by record levels of unemployment, home foreclosures and business failures. Its state government is paralyzed, the legislative process rendered impotent by extreme partisanship, special interests and ballot-box governance. Its schools and colleges, once the best in the nation, are mired in a slow but steady decline.
Given all that and more, the stakes couldn't be higher as Californians elect a new governor.
We desperately need a dynamic leader to take our state in a new direction — someone with a clear vision, a strong track record and a creative yet practical road map to recovery that includes reviving the battered economy, overhauling the bloated government and balancing the budget without jeopardizing the most critical services.
Sadly, we don't see such a candidate on the Nov. 2 ballot.
