After 9 years and Condit's fall, Levy trial begins

WASHINGTON – If one person is associated with the mysterious slaying of Washington intern Chandra Levy, it isn't the man who will soon be tried on charges he murdered her. It's former California congressman Gary Condit, whose political career imploded after he was romantically linked to the woman and became the No. 1 suspect.

Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, goes on trial Monday for Levy's 2001 killing. However, he's not even a blip on the national consciousness of the case, which dominated news coverage until the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks rendered it an afterthought.
While police no longer believe Condit had anything to do with Levy's death, his presence will continue to hang over the trial. Condit's spokesman, Bert Fields, said Condit expects to be called as a witness at Guandique's trial, though he has not been subpoenaed.

Fields said Condit will cooperate fully with authorities. But the ex-congressman, who is writing a book about his experience, will not comment on the trial until it ends.

Bill Miller, a spokesman for the prosecutors' office, declined comment on the case and whether Condit will be called as a witness, citing a gag order issued earlier this month.

3. I wonder if Gary Condit would consent to being interviewed by Scarborough.
That would be worth watching.

2. Condit was no angel, nor was he a murderer
He was a California politician who knew how to make things very nice for himself and other congressmen.

However, he had nothing to do with Chandra's death. And schtupping her didn't help ANYTHING.

6. I remember all the claims by Republicans saying that Condit knew how to
dispose of a body in such a way that nobody would ever find the body ...

and a year later, a guy walking his dog located the body in a park not far from her apartment ... a park which was, if you believe the "liberal media" which focused solely on Condit being the culprit, had been scoured with a fine-toothed comb.

Not well done for someone who, according to Republicans (and they wouldn't lie, would they???), knew the right people for disposing of bodies ...

7. I just read a new book out on her murder. I forget the title (sorry).
But it wasn't that great anyhow. In it, the authors talk about Condit's serial adultery. He always led his girl friends to believe that he would quit his job as congressman, get a divorce and be with them. Poor Chandra believed him (as did other women in his past). It does not appear that he had anything to do with her murder (or her disappearance). He was just a fast talking charmer who made her disguise her appearance in public, forbade her to tell anyone about their affair(or he would break it off) and generally treated her like she was nothing. You have to wonder about this girl's self image...

Sadly, Chandra's mother is still quite bitter and still blames Condit (what it is she blames him for I am not quite sure). He certainly didn't cause her to come to Washington in the first place and her decision to run in Rock Creek Park was not his idea. But I do feel for the mother. It has to be a very difficult thing (perhaps an indescribable one) to endure...

Evidently, Chandra was the victim of a vicious, sick killer who had attacked several other women. Fortunately, one of them had taken some defensive training, which saved her life. Chandra hadn't and it might have made the difference if she had.

As sad story...I was sick at heart when I finished it...
