Was out canvassing in Virginia CD10 for Jeff Barnett and ran into disgruntled millionaires
Because of the Bush Depression I was forced to take a job in Northern Virginia - I still make it back to Florida about twice a month but this weekend I stuck around and canvassed for Jeff Barnett in the 10th District against Frank Wolf.

I got assigned a turf to canvass that was largely Democratic but one portion was a converted farm field covered with freshly built million dollar houses on 4 acre lots.

While canvassing this "new money country club" I got treated to the following:

Ms. Millionaire drove up to my car on her $6,000 John Deere riding mower and wanted to know what I was doing in her neighborhood with my Florida tags (mind you I drive a very nice car) and we explained whereupon we got to hear from her and her nutjob husband how they were being oppressed by all those taxes (they claimed they worked 7 months a year to pay taxes - LIE) and how gov't was ... well if you've ever listened to Limbaugh you know the R/W lies.

I called his bullsh*t and told him to stay off my damned socialist roads and don't call the fire department anymore. He sang me a verse of how tough his life is and I said yeah right pal.. I see exactly how tough it is.

Ooh he pissed me off. I wasn't going to donate anymore to the elections but I went out and dropped another $250.00 into campaigns today.

I hate these spoiled millionare out for themselves crybabies!

1. I met that couple . . .

many times when I was canvassing for Obama, Warner and Connolly in VA-11 last go-round. I have a pretty thick skin to have knocked 4,000 doors in Prince William County - the McMansions in the western part of the District are the worst. One of the bastards keyed my car - I'm sure it was the Got Hope? and related Democratic bumper stickers.

I don't ever want to see the mower lady and her chubby hubby again. My hat's off to you, but I am ODed on the trying to reason with the over-privileged in gated communities.

I am afraid that this is the best we will have to show for it this time . . .

2. Their dirty little secret...
...is that they're probably mortgaged out the wazoo to afford all that. The McMansion dwellers aren't the wealthy, they're the wannabe wealthy. They're scared to death and have bought into the whole wingnut story about how the Republicans are going to save their asses by protecting them from poor folk.

I have a good friend who's an investment counselor in a McMansion community. She knows.

3. My former landlord
Had a total of nine vehicles. They included two racing boats, three motorcycles, a Hummer, a classic Mustang, and two normal cars.

He used to complain non-stop about the economy and how it was killing him. A few times, he used the money we paid him for utilities to make payments on his vehicles, and our power was shut off.

The idea never even seemed to enter his mind to maybe sell some of his vehicles. Too him, they were a symbol of his status, and it would have been like amputating an arm.

I am so glad I have my own house now and don't have to deal with crap like that anymore.

5. It's interesting in a sociological sense to see how people use
the illusion of status as legitimate status.
