Junior Seau, former football star, drives off cliff after arrest for alleged domestic violence

Former USC and San Diego Chargers football star Junior Seau sustained unknown injuries Monday morning after the car he was driving plunged off a cliff in San Diego County.

The incident occurred after he was arrested in Oceanside on suspicion of domestic violence. An Oceanside Police Department spokesman said he could not comment on the case and that a statement would be released soon. He said his department was not investigating the accident.

The crash occurred in Carlsbad, south of Oceanside, when the sport utility vehicle driven by Seau, who also played for the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots, went over a beachside cliff.

The 41-year-old had been released from a San Diego County jail facility just before the crash.

1. One of the sad parts of our culture is
we have young people like this who get ultra wealthy without guidance on how to be good citizens. That is why people like Drew Brees are so impressive because somewhere they got it all balanced, but yet since they don't make the news the good judgement they use seldom make it into the news.

8. I am aware of him
I watched him play college ball and watched him with the Chargers as well as the Patriots. He was lucky during his playing career to not get into any serious trouble, but like most players he probably had little help in dealing with fame and fortune, unlike the Manning boys whose dad Archie had experienced it first hand so could help. I also went to the University of Southern Mississippi where my major was Sports Admin. and Coaching and did coach until health problems forced me to have to give it up. I also grew up with Walter Payton and during my college years was friends with players like Louis Lipps, Reggie Collier, Jerald Baylis, Mike Landrum, and Richard Byrd who all went on to play pro football. All had to learn about the perils of being a celebrity and seem to have done ok with it, but they didn't have training to prepare them. Some coaches try to help their former players like Jeff Bower, but most times they learn through experiencing it.

10. Laughable
A 41-year-old former pro has some sort of breakdown and it's because he's a young man unable to deal with his wealth and celebrity.

You might try a less-broad brush next time.

11. You might not like being made aware
of facts that don't fit into your ideal image, but some of us do know things you don't. I offer no excuse but facts and if you can't deal with it then sorry, but having been on the inside some I am giving you an insight you otherwise wouldn't get. It is neither meant to condemn or condone, nor to excuse. I would rather be educated than cynical like some.

Yes, in order for someone to earn a certain income maybe it would be better for them to take "citizenship" lessons from rich folks.

16. The problem with this is the average athlete in general
is no more likely to be in trouble with the law then people of the same demographic background. I.E. Drew Brees is the norm not the exception. The massive coverage entertainers get when they break the law makes it seem otherwise.

19. Police: No charges against ex-NFL star for driving car off cliff
<snip>

"Police do not intend to charge former NFL linebacker Junior Seau for driving his car off a cliff.

Police in Carlsbad, California, said Monday night that drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the incident.

"It appears Mr. Junior Seau was tired and fell asleep at the wheel," said Lt. Bruce May.

Seau, however, still faces a domestic violence charge.

Just hours before he drove his car off the cliff in Carlsbad early Monday morning, he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Oceanside, California."
