*GASP* Muslim soup!!! *OMG* Canadian Muslim soup!! ...well it is Campbell's
A Canadian line of Campbell's soups has activists stewing over Islamic connection

Campbell Soup Co., the Camden, N.J., food giant, has been fighting a grass-roots boycott of its products after its Canadian subsidiary rolled out a line of soups certified as halal, meaning they're prepared according to Islamic dietary laws.

Campbell Co. of Canada introduced the soups in a few Canadian markets in January, although American bloggers didn't catch up to the news until earlier this month.

Blogger Pamela Geller began calling for a boycott earlier this month via her widely read site, Atlas Shrugs. Other bloggers soon joined in.

The halal soups, designated with a special label, are available only in Canada. The company has no plans to offer a similar line in the United States, said John Faulkner, a company spokesman.

In an interview, Geller, who was instrumental in whipping up opposition to an Islamic community center and mosque in Lower Manhattan, said she has no objection to the halal certification itself. Rather, she said, she opposes Campbell's decision to have its Canadian products certified by the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), an organization that government prosecutors alleged had ties to the terrorist group Hamas in a 2007 conspiracy case.

The group was referred to Campbell by a Canadian trade organization whose member companies have used ISNA for their halal certification for years. "We point out to the people supporting this that they are a very legitimate entity," Faulkner said. "We feel very comfortable working with them."

2. Unbelievable
The depth and breadth of stupidity plus bigotry...

Geez, I'd rather eat the stuff, knowing it was halal or kosher! Might be just a little safer than the rest of it.

3. Neither halal nor kosher preclude the presence of high fat, salt, the dreaded HFCS
Or any of hundreds of other bad things you can eat.

6. That's true
But at least you can RECOGNIZE what the food is and make an informed decision whether it's good for you or not. Or decide to limit your intake of the fatty, salty stuff.

It's food my grandmother would have recognized. Oh, except for the goat meat.

12. By the time I learned that the underlying reasons for the 1978 Campbell's boycott were over, I had..
...already reformed my own dietary practices so that most of their products were not acceptable.

13. My grandparents were not averse to goat meat
and they kept neither kosher nor halal; it was merely a matter of survival.

17. I've always wanted to try it
I see it on the menu at Jamaican and Middle Eastern restaurants all the time.

I've had moose, venison, bear and even alligator once.

But you're right - when times are lean, you eat what's available - or go without.

20. Goat meat is actually very delicious if prepared correctly.
I've had stewed goat meat at a few birthday parties and such for Mexican friends of mine...it was amazing. I also had curried goat a couple of times in Jamaica and that was pretty delicious, too. It has its own taste, a little like beef and a little like pork (and even a little like goose, perhaps), but not quite like any of them. I've never found it very gamey at all.

4. I haven't heard a word about this in Canada
Even our RWers aren't mentioning it. We regularly see stores advertising Halal foods.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the same as Kosher food. And I would trust either kind more than I would McDonalds or KFC.

It's a total non-issue.

7. That's probably because it isn't really real
this nutbag took 3 steps away from logic (and capitalism) to get to this point. Hey  she has to keep her name out there and the audience is receptive to ANYTHING- clearly

14. I love that show.
In fact, I have enjoyed a lot of CBC shows over the years -- 22 minutes, Air Farce, Rick Mercer were/are all brilliant when at their best.

It costs a bit more, but if you like being discomforted in the crotchal region, accept no substitutes.

Geller has also lent her support to a number of other political causes. She has strongly defended former Serbian president Slobodan Milošević, denied the existence of Serbian concentration camps in the 1990s,<19> said that black South Africans are engaging in a "genocide" against whites,<20> and expressed support for the far right English Defence League.<21><8>

In 2008, Geller co-wrote an editorial for Arutz Sheva expressing her distaste for fellow Jews who are not politically conservative:

It galls me that the Jews I fight for are self-destructive, suicidal even. Here in America (and the world over), Israel's real friends are in the Republican Party and yet over 80% of American Jews are Democrats. I don't get it. The conventional wisdom on the Left is that Israel is an oppressor and her actions are worse than the world's most depraved and dangerous regimes. Chomsky, Finkelstein, Soros–these men are the killers.<22>
