Meet the Brown Widow Spider, coming to your area soon from Southern California!
In my mailbox today saw a tan/brown spider with a tan hour glass on its bottom, looked like a skinny black widow wearing sandy desert camo. did an internet search for brown widow and there it is! It is taking over So Cal and spreading, and possibly replacing the black widow population, which is good because although its bite is a bit of a downer it is nowhere near as bad as a black widow bite.

Read about it at this website from the University of California, Riverside. They are interested in hearing from you if you find one in your area as they want to track its spread.

Hey, I get tons of black widows where I live, so one more just doesn't bother me.

I think I did see one of these recently.

10. TY for the info. It has a couple of hundred miles to go before it gets here...
... but my SD County sis in law was overwrought about its potential presence in her yard, so it's nice to get some rational info. And a photo!

11. actually it may be a better thing...used to have black widows in my mailbox sometimes but not
anymore, looks like the brown ones are doing some ethnic cleansing against the black widows and chasing them off
