The Salvation Army, recently. They do a lot of good, but recently they have taken to lying. And it bugs me.
Recently, I keep hearing their advertisement about how they do all these programs, and do them *without government* money. On my local liberal radio station. Not only are they preaching to the wrong audience, but they are flat lying.
I worked for the SA some years ago(about 5). I saw a good swathe of the inside of the church. Overall good people, though with some fairly standard and odd tenancies toward conservatism and certain types of bigotry. Better than most churches, certainty. They actually do things to help people who need help. They package that help with their Christan beliefs. So be it, as long as they are helping people.
But the meals at their kids camps are provided by the school lunch program. Their churches are built with government grants as "community centers", and they brag about it. Other parts of their programs are similarly buoyed by government help. Which may not be my ideal use of tax dollars, but its hella better than pointless war. They are actually helping people.
But that they are getting out there and making a point to actively lie, spending money to put their lie in advertisement. That really bugs me.

6. They are pretty good at what they do. |

what would be a fellowship hall with a kitchen in most churches, used for the occasional coffee hour or meeting, actually are generally used during the week for food kitchens, after school programs, etc. The Sunday school rooms are often used for various support group meetings. etc. What I was told is that the SA segrigates the money, and only their money is used to pay for the building of the actual chapel portion, as that is "church" and cannot be funded with govt money. But the rest of the building (IE most of the cost) is paid for by the tax payer. Or at least this is what officers at a number of different locations bragged to me. They see it as just common sense, to use the resources that are available. And That is true. I dont even have a big problem with that.
But it burns me that they are lying about it now that the big bogey man is "government spending". I would imagine the greater part of Americans, definitely the greater part of teabaggers, do not even realise that the SA is a church, nor do they care.
