City Could Crack Down On Absent Property Owners
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus City Council was scheduled on Monday to address legislation that could bring stiffer penalties for owners of abandoned and neglected homes.
Justin Boggs and his mother live on a street where eight of the 30 homes are abandoned, 10TV's Jeff Hogan reported.
"They need to realize that they are destroying these neighborhoods," Boggs said.
According to the city, investors purchase properties and wait for values to rise while doing nothing to maintain them. Some of the investors are from outside Ohio.
Residents are then left to help maintain the properties, Hogan reported.
"No one ever comes back (and) mows (the yards)," Boggs said. "You can tell it's vacant from a mile away."
According to the Columbus City Attorney's office, those who are convicted of disappearing as the property owner would be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor and would have to pay a maximum $1,000 fine. The owner could also face up to six months in jail.
