Univision Accepts $80,000 To Air GOP Group’s Ads That Tell Latinos Not To Vote

Yesterday, Latinos for Reform — a Republican 527 group — announced that it purchased an $80,000 buy on Univision to air ads urging Nevada Latino voters not to vote. Robert Desposada, a conservative political consultant and political analyst for Univision, has described the ad as an expression of the Latino community’s frustration with the lack of immigration reform. Apparently, telling Latino voters not to vote will somehow empower them. “It’s the only way for Hispanics to stand up and demand some attention,” Desposada claims. “I can’t ask people to support a Republican candidate who has taken a completely irresponsible and bordering on racist position on immigration,” he said about senatorial candidate Sharron Angle (R-NV). (As a side note, the ad doesn’t mention Angle or the fact that Republicans have been obstructing reform for the past year).

Watch the ad in English and in Spanish:

1. necesito decir a mis amigos latinos a votar en noviembre
es importante, porque el GOP no le repectan y quieran solamente trabajandos con bajos salarias....es lo mejor que puedo hablar.

I'll tell my Hispanic friends they BETTER vote-the Gop does not respect them and simply thinks they'll get cheap labor out of the deal.

3. Right, cuz immigration reform will totally be awesome under GOP leadership
Ya know, if this works, Latinos almost deserve what their silence voted for. Except no one deserves that.

4. Right, it's obviously the voters' fault if the GOP tries to suppress the vote.
Gotcha.

5. It is if they fall for it
Strong-arming at the polls, robo-calls that announce the wrong date, deliberate disinformation: that's the repubs' fault.

Not voting 'cuz some dumbass voice on TV told you not to. That's all on you. We're supposed to be educated, remember? Not that we are.

16. Someone so judgmental about the intelligence of others
would do well to use some. It's never just one commercial. It's also the caging lists, and the "lost" reg forms and the under equipping of the precinct and the vote challenges. You create a hostile environment and people get discouraged. Duh.

24. I'm discouraged every damn day
I work. Or don't. I scrimp and struggle and save and forgo for another day. And the weak-as-water, Chamberlain-esque, back-biting dems have given me precious little to be satisfied over.

But I still vote.

A vote is an expression of hope, not a guarantee of results. That just ain't how our system of government works.

That repubs would do this is as disgusting as it is not at all surprising. But anybody but that watches this ad and says to themselves, "Hey, yeah! That'll show 'em. I WON'T vote, is what I'll do. Then they're SURE to see how unhappy I am and will change the way they operate and in the future will TOTALLY work in my interests. And all because I didn't vote! Gosh, that's the dream, innit?"

Um, so I don't have much sympathy. If you gotta fight to vote, fuckin' fight.

25. You're arguing against your own fantasy, no the reality
that minority voters face in this country every election. But go right ahead.

29. I'm curious what you think my fantasy is
That minority voters aren't actively marginalized every election season? Is that the fantasy you think I'm living in?

Telling (any group of) voters not to vote at all because they won't get the policy results they want is like telling the poor not to go to work 'cuz they'll never make rent this month anyway.

And yet people still go to work knowing that the heat might get turned off at the end of the month or that their car might get repossessed because they hope somehow it'll get better next week. Yet the mechanisms of enculturation and socialization in which the (minority) voter and the (low-wage) worker find themselves enmeshed aren't so dissimilar.

This is verifiable recent history here in Phoenix. I cannot believe the responses this thread is getting. I'm as white as it gets, and I get it, cuz I've seen it in action at precincts with a large percentage of Latino voters.

8. They just played that ad on MSNBC. Going to those lengths right now shows a big weakness. This is
a ridiculous ad, and if they were confident in their polling and lead, there would be no reason to place that piece of garbage.

11. Univision should be ashamed of themselves.
Like I said on the other thread about this. Even though this is a tramsparent and crude trap, it may do damage. I hope it backfires on them big time, because these ads are an insult to even an idiot's intelligence.

A counter attack ad is necessary. We need an ad pointing out this is the GOP trying to fool the Hispanic population.

Honestly, I've wondered why the Dems have said so little about GOP racism on their ads, when the GOP has given us so much material to show what they are made of

12. One of the funniest, most desperate moves by the Repubs
It's a glimmer of hilarious, sheer genius.

Latinos undoubtedly vote Democrat, and the Republicans know there's no way in hell they'd be able to convince enough Latinos to switch, especially not with ads praising certain Republicans. So they've gotten realistic about the situation. If you're not going to vote for us, then don't vote at all.

It's absolutely pathetic to try this shit. When in history has not voting made your voice heard? I hope Latinos (and other Americans) don't fall for this.

The answer is not to vote for Dems, but not to vote at ALL??? That's the most insulting thing I think I've ever heard. Do they really see Hispanics as THAT childlike, that easy to manipulate? And there isn't even a HINT of a promise that the Repubs will do better!
