My wife is always asking me why I am on the website and I try to share posts with her, but being ESL,it is hard for her to grasp sometimes and I think a Spanish forum would be a benefit to those that can be added to our numbers...

44. Alrighty then...
let me share a little tale with you my good sir...

As I have stated up thread my wife is Puerto Rican...so naturally she speaks english with a very heavy latin accent. Anyways, while working for the "Shack" as a sales associate (where BTW, she always surpassed quotas and won numerous contests)a complaint was lodged against her by a co-worker concerning her accent. It should also be stated that she inadvertently placed this person (her dotted line boss) in some hot water for not doing his job.

So when promotion time comes around, guess what??? She is told flat out "you are not being promoted because of your accent". Even though she can do the job and do it well, she is passed over for promotion.

Then just the other night (she now works for Kmart) a redneck white trash female bitched at her manager and told her that they need to hire people who can speak english!

So forgive me if I do not buy into your bullshit argument...I have had it with close-minded bigots!

Who can not be the least bit compassionate toward others. And BTW...just b/c Edwards supports one item I do not agree with...well WTF is your point anyway?

It is people like you that come up with this english only crap, that adds fuel to the fire against hard working people like my wife. SO WHAT if we have a spanish language forum here? Don't like it? then don't try to read it...pretty simple huh?

MY God...did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe we could begin to swing some of the traditional hispanic vote from the RW to the LW if we could reach them...on their terms?

57. Let me rephrase that
Edited on Mon May-21-07 09:36 PM by quinnox
When I say english only what I mean is that immigrants should have to take english speaking classes as part of their orientation to getting their green card and so on. And it would help them also greatly in the final analysis, don't you agree? In terms of integrating into society and getting a job etc.

But, I understand you are upset about your wife and her non-promotion but I had absolutley nothing to do with that, but hey, you want compassion, you have my sympathy. That was quite wrong because she DID speak english and her accent shouldn't have been a factor in whether she got promoted.

I bring up Edwards because I knew I would be attacked for my position about learning english as a right winger and I had to show it is not only the position of the extreme right.

62. Thank you for the clarification
And yes I do agree that it makes sense to learn English. However, my wife is fluent in English yet has trouble with dialect, word usage and many of the other quirks and oddities of the English language. When we watch movies together we run the Spanish subtitles so as to not miss meanings. Point is, a Spanish forum could help the Democratic cause more than it could harm...no?

then it will lead to other language sub forums because we have to be fair and include French and Italian and what about the Dutch and then DU eventually will be unrecognizable. I think english is good enough and most people in the world today learn it anyway as part of their education. It is the most common language in the world.

But I didn't say the rest of the world has to learn english, only those that choose to immigrate here. But most of the other countries in the world do teach english in the elementary school and it is because english has become the language of business for the world. Why do you think so many foreigners speak english, it's because they had to learn it in school because their country wants to be competitive in the world.

102.  You posted the word "serious" , as opposed to "series!!1!1!!1!"
I am so confused here.

(The potential for this snark was killin me...in the end resistance was futile)

Ok on a real note: I have suggested to the DU admin that there is a real need here for an automatic language translator system. The DU can only be enriched by the addition of folks who are not American citizens. The fact that many of these folks do not speak english fluent enough to communicate their thoughts with all here should not be a bar to them. I know you as well as most of my fellow Duers would love the opportunity to go one on one with progressives from Iran or Syria or Iraq for instance. This interchange from outside our little box could do us a lot of good here!

If you use a little imagination and predict the future of blogs and forums, universal translators becomes an easy prediction. It is my hope that the Democratic Underground will be a bit ahead of the curve on this.

My apologies to you quinnox...that bit of snark was immature on my part...but too funny to me to pass on. Your points are well taken but even you must admit they are points most freepers would concur with... I hope you do not think that I believe you to be a freeper. You are my fellow DUer, the fact that you can use spell check proves this!

So what if we had all those forums. No one is going to make you go to them. I promise. You don't even have to look at them. You know where it says, "Customize Forums"? Go there and customize and you won't even have to see them.

...and actually, to get a forum here, it requires enough people showing an interest, so it isn't a matter of fairness. There would have to be enough French people or Dutch people wanting it... ...but mostly, I PROMISE you, no one will make you go to the forums you don't want to go to.

Jeez...depriving someone else for NO reason at all.

Is someone making you go to forums you don't want to go to? Some terrible space monkeys? You should report it.

131. So what if other people have the same problem learning languages? You'd tell them
to fuck off and get out of our country?

You know most educated residents other developed countries learn at least a little bit of a second or third language because it just makes sense. Where do Americans get off thinking the rest of the world has to cater to them by speaking English? Maybe if we actually taught a few languages early on in school here (not the less-than-ideal classes starting in high school, either), within a few decades it wouldn't matter at all because everyone would be able to communicate in a few languages. How is that a bad thing? It makes you more worldly, more open to new experiences, and much more valuable in the workplace. If Europeans, Africans and Asians can do it, we really shouldn't have a problem.

and, yes, I was trying to make a point.

When I lived in HK I made a serious attempt to learn Chinese (Cantonese)....b/c that's where I lived. I didn't expect everyone to know English (even though it had been a British colony for ALMOST 100 years ;-).

When you don't know the language of where you live, you're at a most distinct DISADVANTAGE. And the "laws of the jungle" suggest that the smartest/most agile members will learn to adapt ~ LEARN is the opperative word. The rest, well....they prolly might not do so well.

100. Here in New Mexico,
we have our own language. For instance, my friend named her cat Huero ("wa-ro), which means "fair haired anglo guy," roughly. She named him that because he's a white cat.

It's not a derogatory term. And to my knowledge, it's New Mexican as opposed to Mexican or Spanish.

Language is specific in the U.S. now. I LOVE IT!

P.S. How do you guys add the marks above the letters?

"Güero" is often used as a derogatory word for light-skinned people (European and/or American) in México D.F., the capital, but it is also used by my friends and family in New Mexico, near the boarder. It can also be just a salutation. Por ejemplo:

"¿Qué onda güero?" = "What's up, white boy?"

104. Welcome to the DU edwardsguy
I have enjoyed your provocative thread here. It brings to mind a suggestion I made to the DU Admin last year: Look into a "Universal Translator" system for the DU. If one uses a little imagination and predicts what the future of blogs and forums will look like, it is not a great leap to predict that "Universal Translators" will be a common automatic function available to all users.

I know for a fact that the DU would be enriched by the thoughts of online Iraqi citizens as well as Iranians and Syrians and etc. right now! I have no problem with your notions of a Spanish speaking forum here...actually I welcome it and encourage others like it. I suspect that the DU will someday (soon I hope), have that Universal Translator I have predicted, NOT because we are bowing to pressure to conform but because we have chosen to expand our horizons.

I hope you are as enriched by the Democratic Underground as I have been. May your tail-feathers remain un-scorched! :pals:

110. Bad idea for clever Latinos...

I agree that Americans are generally uneducated where it comes to other languages (government failure); but how can you expect your thoughts to be understood & appreciated if you don't speak American (not the queen's) English?

Personally, I love discovering other cultures through travel, language (and food!); but America needs its immigrants to do exactly what they would expect if an American wants to assimilate into their country -- learn & use the native language.

If an American does not show enough respect to learn the language of the country he/she wants to live in -- it's just as arrogant for a non-American to refuse to learn how to express him/herself in American English.

121. Let me try to explain it this way:
If you have ever spent any real time with a person who's native language is anything other than English, then you would be aware that the English language is probably the hardest of all to learn and comprehend. Why do you think they use translators at the UN? That is so meaning and content are delivered accurately. Nuance is also very important. So if we have enlighted Latinos on this board who can reach out to others in Spanish to relay the message we are trying to get across, what harm is done?

I am in no way suggesting that we turn DU into a Spanish website. I am simply asking that we embrace a group that has been shit upon for far too long in this country. With the exception of the African American community, which other ethnic group can you think of that has been so disenfranchised? Right here in this very thread we have people who are unwilling to lend a hand to their fellow man to assist them in making this country better for all!

My wife is raising our children to be bi-lingual and I thank the powers that be for that! Because whether you like it or not, the Spanish language will continue to grow within this country...I suggest you get used to that!

122. I'm 100% with you edwardsguy
my wife and I travel to Mexico every year and LOVE IT. we plunked down $300+ on Rosetta Stone software to get fluent (now if we can just find the time)

anyway there are some on this thread that astound me. English only will get them nowhere in life. why NOT learn other languages.

and fwiw I would love to see a group for EACH language!

:applause: to you.

let me apologize for the bigots here

123. Thanks!
I have been wife my wife for almost six years now...and I thought that Spanish would be pretty easy to learn (btw I have also tried the software route as well) by simply being with her...yea right!

I can usually understand what she is talking about when she speaks with her Friends and family. When we visit PR, her family has a ball with me; talking to me is Spanish.

It saddens me that some people just don't seem to get it. It is almost a childlike tantrum it seems. "If you don't speak English, then I am taking my toys and going home"

My wife depends on me to explain current events to her and sadly bases her political thoughts solely on what I say and do, rather than exploring and learning for herself. It is not simply a matter of laziness, but rather a lack of a group to educate and enlighten her on current issues and how those issues can affect the Latino community. Univision is her choice for news, but they are so topical in their coverage, because they report on ALL spanish speaking countries and do not have the time to delve deeply into American politics.

I think that if a Spanish forum were to be created, I could entice her into joining DU and getting more involved...IMHO

126. Another benefit
is that it would be helpful to any English-speaking DUer who wanted to improve their comprehension in Spanish. No better way to learn than through immersion. Both my sisters augment their learning by watching Univision and they've both become more fluent in Spanish as a result.

129. why don't you officially propose one?
you need 10 DUers to agree. the rules for asking for a new group should be on the main page somewhere. you need a mission statement for the group which you put in a new thread in GD.

i'll certainly join up!

142. You were doing fine until you became arrogant...
I know more español than anyone I know. I love and revere Latino culture (I have Medeteranian roots); but you give your people a black eye when you say (refering to the growth of español in America), "...I suggest you get used to that."

Please get off your high horse & debate like an adult.

127. Sounds like a good idea to me.
Personally, I would like to see language forums for as many different languages as possible. I would love to know how to say, "Bush is a fucking moron." in Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, French, German, and as many other languages as possible. You just never know when I might get to travel and it might come in handy to know that phrase.

Oh, and :hi: and welcome to DU. :pals:

143. Everyone in the World Knows that Bush is a Fucking Moron...
...but I understand the need for Americans abroad to be able to express in native languages that we REJECT the arrogance of our government.
