Al Gore to raise awareness on global warming in Istanbul
Monday, May 21, 2007

ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, who has started a worldwide campaign to raise awareness for “Global Climate Change,” and which is accepted as one of the greatest threats of the century, is coming to Turkey for a conference hosted by World Wildlife Fund, Turkey and Garanti Bank. Gore will deliver his presentation, based on his 30-year work and scientific data, to Turkish opinion leaders, leaders of the Turkish business world and media on June 12 at Çýraðan Palace. Al Gore is back in the spotlight with his environmentalist approach. In the U.S. he and a team of renowned climate change scientists and educators are training more than 1,000 individuals on the effects of – and solutions for – global warming. In his presentation titled, “An Inconvenient Truth,” based on the Oscar winning documentary of the same name, Gore will present the effects of global climate change such as melting icebergs, the increasing number of storms and droughts and will draw attention to controversial subjects and misinformation on the subject. Within the framework of his campaign, he will explain using scientific proof that humanity can no longer afford to ignore global warming, and by showing what can be done, he will invite everyone to do their share to solve the problem. The film was directed by Davis Guggenheim and produced by Laurie David, Lawrence Bender and Scott Z. Burns.

The biggest environmental threat:

WWF-Turkey Chairman Akýn Öngör says, “Global climate change is the biggest environmental threat that the world faces. The floods, big and frequent forest fires, diseases that are rapidly spreading, droughts, the decrease in rainfall and consequent water shortages are some of the consequences of global warming." By inviting Al Gore to Turkey, they aim to create awareness on global climate change and to build momentum for the public movement, which Öngör thinks is necessary to start implementing the inevitable precautions that need to be taken. Garanti Bank's President and CEO Ergun Özen says, “For 15 years, we have been the corporate sponsor of WWF-Turkey and have been supporting its environmental conservation projects. Our goal is to help create a more livable environment that is better conserved. In January, we supported the screening of “The Inconvenient Truth” in Turkey. Now we are inviting former U.S. Vice President Al Gore to Turkey. With this conference, held to raise awareness for global climate change, we wish to invite everyone to do their share.”

Of course, this isn't really important to the Diane Sawyers of this media. Just show pictures of Mr. Gore and say he is fat and continue to prod and push him about something so insiginificant compared to this crisis that it actually embarrasses me to be an American. THIS is the kind of news that should elicit more dialogue regarding Mr. Gore, but more imnportantly, our future on this planet and what WE are going to do to secure it. I honeslty find it sad that his work on this crisis is simply relegated to second string behind mindless gossip and political sound bites.
