Is it even POSSIBLE that Mrs. Thomas thought Anita would
apologize? Every time I hear that on a news break I'm dumbfounded. I have to believe she had an alterior motive but I can't imagine what it is!

1. I can't figure out why she thought this was a reasonable thing to do after almost 20 yrs?
I mean, did a similar thought not occur to her at any point since the original testimony in 1991? What took her so long?

3. That's what I mean. She HAS to have another motive. Is she
thinking that people will like her husband more if they're reminded of that disgusting episond of history? I'm trying to think of some other reason but I haven't come up with anything!

16. she probably does have another motive.......
....but I can't imagine what that might be. We would need an insight into how conservatives think and, sorry but I don't have a clue about that.

And if her motivation is how people will think of her husband, I doubt that this episode would change anything anyway. Those who like Thomas and those who don't like him would not be affected by anything his wife does. These things are based on political leanings.......

5. Well, it was bound to happen eventually ...
... you and I actually agree on something. "Schnockered off her gourd" seems to sum it up pretty nicely.

6. Apologies ae a sign of capitulation and weakness
It's not about the apology itself anymore. It's about making your adversary look vulnerable by forcing them to admit they were wrong.

7. There are other factors here
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 03:19 AM by marions ghost
1. This is the second time Ms. Thomas has asked for an apology--the first was in 07 after he published a book about his life and Anita wrote an article about her side of the story.

2. Ms. Thomas has founded a tea party group called Liberty Central (a questionable activity by the wife of a Supreme). My bet is this "apology" was cooked up by this group --ie. to dredge up the old conflict and remind people (their supporters) of the evil elite liberal, Anita Hill. And to remind liberals of a serious loss.

3. It's close to election time. DEFLECTION--let's open this old societal wound...ie. throw the masses this old bone and watch them wrangle over it instead of important issues.

4. This "apology request" constitutes harassment of a perceived victim, which encourages victimization in general. It can be used to justify other acts of passive-aggression, or open harassment. The point is to make your opponents feel weak and remind them of a "loss." It's an old, old strategy. it's very effective because people get caught up in the tabloid nature of the story.

---------------

No, I don't think it's about ANY expectation of apology from Anita. It's ALL about sewing the seeds of division right before the election, IMO.

24. thanks
I was raised by two liberal journalists, both from R families. They taught me to look for the underlying story. Never more applicable than in these dark times.

And what will be the talk shows' hot topics for today? And how will the rightwing mouthpieces grab the meme and stuff it down the throats of the willing?

Ms. Thomas has given permission.

15. I surely don't think anyone needs anymore reason for division!
I can't recall anytime since the equal rights issue when thre ws any more division than now.

17. this is the best explanation I've seen so far....
....in fact, I was just thinking that maybe she was thinking of running for office with some tea bagger group.

It certainly makes more sense than waiting 19 yrs for an apology she knew she wasn't going to get anyway!

9. Like I have said Simson and Hatch vilified Anita Hill. Where is the list Simson had in his pocket?
Hey Alan... gonna produce that list in your pocket? Now? C'mon Man up!!!!!!

Didn't think so you fraud.

Just like all of them fraud fraud fraud fraud fraud fraud fraud.

There were others that backed up Anita Hill but they weren't called for some reason. Maybe because they were lowly blacks too?

11. If I were Dr. Hill, I wouldn't dignify it.
It should be the other way around. Benedict Thomas harassed her on the job and made her life hell. Dr. Hill did not deserve what happened to her as well as the infamy it brought her.

Let Virginia look like a fool along with her husband.

13. Dr. Hill seems to be doing a good job of maintaining dignity, doesn't she?
When asked why it was that the Thomases seem to revisit this ancient history every so often over the years, while she does not, all she had to say was that she has no idea what goes on in their home. I thought that was brilliant, because it tosses the onus right back where it should be: on Clarence and Ginni, without giving away anything of herself.

21.  I definitely agree. That was brilliant of Dr. Hill.
What I liked the most was the fact that she went on with her life and lived well. After all, living well is the best revenge. While Dr. Hill maintained her dignity, the Thomases sunk to the level of classlessness and pettiness.

19. Did I hear correctly? This call was placed around 7:30 AM on a Saturday morning?
Perhaps it wasn't quite a drunk dialing situtation, but Mrs. Thomas made sure to pick a time when Dr. Hill would almost certainly not be in her office. How much gumption does it take to leave a voicemail? Real bravery would have been to make the request during an actual conversation - the whole concept is still pretty delusional, but at least she'd have shown the courage of her loony convictions. So can we conclude that Mrs. Thomas is drunk, crazy, and/or gutless?

Didn't Mrs. Thomas just start up some kind of Teabagger think tank? (Now, there's an oxymoron.) She's probably trying to drum up publicity and donations to get this underway.

20. Shame we can't send Thomas a photocopier
and ask him if it has shrunk. I stand up for Anita Hill. She was made a fool of by the republican majority in congress and now this Bi**h of a wife of Thomas wants to start it again. She better be careful. I don't think Thomas will get the kind of support now that he did with the Bushies congress. I think he was an old time "masher" or worst and always will be.

22. Extremely poor impulse control and a weak hold on reality.
Except she did restrain herself for 20 years, so maybe "extremely" is the wrong modifier.
