3. And to some of us it's called the Sea of Cortes, not Gulf of California
;)

4. Noted
I'm only going by the terms as given by the USGS, though I'm not for honoring Hernando Cortes any more than I celebrate "Columbus Day".

5. Keep in mind that it was Cortes that named California
after a mythical land from the chivalric novel "Sergas de Esplandián" Published in 1510

"Know, that on the right hand of the Indies there is an island called California very close to the side of the Terrestrial Paradise; and it is peopled by black women, without any man among them, for they live in the manner of Amazons".

7. Yes, I've read several accounts of the origins of "California"
That one I found particularly interesting.

6. You never know if that's ominous or not.
Volcanoes and giant earthquakes, oh my!

It's not like it hasn't happened before.

Let's hope it stays confined to the open sea down there.

10. The southern end of the Gulf is widening by about 3 inches a year.
It's an extremely active seismic area. The whole peninsula has been rifting off the mainland for a couple million years, and will eventually become an island.
