President Obama, abandon this appeal of the unconstitutional ruling on DADT. |
|
DADT will not be repealed in the lame duck session. Sen McCain has vowed to filibuster. Margins will be even tighter after next months elections, if not a thin majority for the Republicans, so repeal in the next Congress will not happen. I repeat: DADT will not repealed in the Congress any time soon. Abandon your appeal. If it is to be repealed in the future, that can happen without this appeal.
It is happening as we speak. The military is not enforcing DADT. Courageous gay Americans are enlisting for the first time or re-enlisting. Do not shatter their dream of service to our country.
Do not bring back Don't Ask, Don't Tell President Obama!

5. That's better than putting all our eggs in the "Senate will repeal in December" basket. |
|
Especially considering, with their likely lowered numbers in November, they will be in even less of a position to do so than they are now.
No more waiting for some mythical future date or until after the next election, because there is always a next election. It's dead now. Leave it alone.

6. Yep. And then Obama can order a stop loss. And then congress might do their shit |
|
And if not, we need an amendment.

7. Leave the court decision in place, then get the Senate to repeal. Do both. |

8. I am convinced people who advise waiting for congressional action do not want it repealed. |
|
Yes, a Congressional repeal IS the gold standard. But winning ugly (letting the court ruling stand, unchallenged by the white house/DOJ) is still winning.
Can any sane, rational person see a way this will pass both houses of Congress? If you cannot answer that, you can't make your argument for waiting.

9. I know how to get it through Congress: |
|
For every gay person kicked out of the military, there must be a replacement from the children and grandchildren of the current members of Congress. DADT would be gone in ten minutes.

10. Either they don't want to see it repealed... |
|
...or they want Obama to be able to take credit for its repeal.

11. Why does having it repealed require an appeal is my question. |
|
Which is why I think it is the latter for many people.

12. If either of those is true, the people holding the view are pretty scary. |
|
The latter being the scarier option - wanting to hold off until Obama can get the credit. While scary, it is completely believable.

13. The most appalling hypocrisy of the appeal defenders is . . . |
|
. . . again and again, on health insurance reform, the wars, etc., we were relentlessly lectured about letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Now LGBTers are being told that nothing less than the perfect will suffice.
Just awesome.

Something great is happening with the halting of discharges and enlistment of openly gay individuals.
That the administration is now willing to halt that for the sake of politics is totally boggling.
