Hill: "I don’t apologize. I have no intention of apologizing, and I stand by my testimony in 1991."

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/10/virginia-thomas-leaves-anita-hill-a-voicemail-asking-for-an-apology-hill-says-no.html

<snip>

A few days ago, Brandeis University professor Anita Hill received a message on her voice mail at work.

“Good morning, Anita Hill, it's Ginny Thomas,” said the voice. “I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. So give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. OK, have a good day.”

Hill didn’t think the call was real.

“I initially thought it was a prank,” Hill told ABC News. “And if it was, I thought the authorities should know about it.”

She reported the call to campus police.

Mark Matthews of our affiliate KGO learned about this and reached out to Virginia Thomas.

Thomas e-mailed him, saying: “I did place a call to Ms. Hill at her office extending an olive branch to her after all these years, in hopes that we could ultimately get passed what happened so long ago. That offer still stands, I would be very happy to meet and talk with her if she would be willing to do the same. Certainly no offense was ever intended.”

Hill told ABC News: “Even if it wasn’t a prank, it was in no way conciliatory for her to begin with the presumption that I did something wrong in 1991. I simply testified to the truth of my experience. For her to say otherwise is not extending an olive branch, it’s accusatory.”

She continued: “I don’t apologize. I have no intention of apologizing, and I stand by my testimony in 1991.”

72. Maybe Ms. Thomas wants to run for public office and doesn't want
to be confronted with the ugly testimony about her husband while campaigning.

Maybe her husband denies what Anita Hill said -- and Ms. Thomas believes her husband.

Maybe Ms. Thomas is just trying to get back at Anita Hill and embarrass Anita Hill.

There are a lot of possibilities here.

But Ms. Thomas needs to learn to let sleeping dogs lie. The accusation is against Clarence Thomas. It's up to him to reach out to Anita Hill and apologize or, if he thinks Anita Hill should apologize to him, to wait for an apology.

Maybe Clarence Thomas's conscience is catching up with him. He is getting older. Maybe he has expressed regrets about having harassed Anita Hill.

Ms. Thomas's behavior is intriguingly foolish.

Seriously, this sounds a bit too canned. I'm thinking someone found out her husband was cheating on her and decided to make sure he knows just how tenuous his political life really is and that she can quickly and easily destroy him.

Watch her complain about being stung after whacking the hornet's nest. That's what they all do.

I can't believe thomas told his wife that it was ok for her to crack open something that has been dead and buried for easily 20 years now.

10. I believe she is referring to her testifying at the hearings...
from the article:

<snip>

ABC: “When you thing about Anita Hill … was she a pawn, was she a liar?”

Justice Thomas: “I really don’t care enough — let me be honest with you. I went through that during the hearing. I thought about it. I really don’t care. What I care about is that the responsible people didn’t put an end to this nonsense.”

Virginia Thomas: “I think there’s a lot of theories, but I hope she once day calls up and apologizes and I look forward to forgiving her. … I’m sure she got swept up into something bigger than she may have understood at the beginning of whatever she was doing, but I think she owes us an apology and I look forward to receiving that phone call or that visit one day. “

“So this isn’t new territory,” Hill told ABC News.

Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 11:18 AM by defendandprotect
That was clear from Prof. Anita Hill's testimony during the hearings --

It was clear from the dozen or more former EEOC employees who would have

testified that Clarence Thomas was a sexual harasser of women --

Those witnesses were denied the right to testify against Clarence Thomas by Sen. Biden

who closed down the hearings in the middle of the night, betraying the lawyers and

advisers representing Prof. Anita Hill who had been promised that the witnesses would

be presented.

These two are just two more crude, bullying "Christians" --

and only the Bush family could have succeeded in putting a sexual pervert on our Supreme Court!

If anyone is interested there's a great book on this subject -- "Strange Justice" --

Either you do it or you defy God's commandment and you don't. But you don't get to construct a counterfeit position that you are entitled to lay in wait for something of which the onus is NOT on Anita Hill, BUT ON YOUR HUSBAND.

44. it's sad that there were others ready and willing to testify
against Thomas. However, Anita Hill, I believe, was the only one called, thus making it more like a media circus-he vs she--type of spectacle. And, while this media circus evolved, his beliefs-were put on the back burner.

I admire Ms. Hill, and really think she would have been a better candidate for the supreme court. Thomas with some of his rulings, has lessened the respectability of the court.

69. In the time period,
Thomas was Hill's boss, sexual harassment and sexually demeaning words and actions, including groping were common and were encouraged in the old boy ethos.
That is a large part of the context of why she was so believable. Around that time a national poll showed 92% of working women has experienced sexual harassment in their job.

Again thanks to Mz. Thomas for raking this up so we can all examine it again.

I suppose she will now leave Hill a tacky message asking her to apologize of taking her first very wierd message to the FBI.

17. Why now? After 19 years?
I know this is all a DISTRACTION...I mean after 19 years, why now? I would think this would encourage Blacks to go to the polls.

But maybe it's just Rove and Murdoch having fun ridiculing the women...maybe a little of 'divide and conquer' of the Black and white women? Maybe 'da boyz' just want to make clear to the 'girls' that 'see, we got the power to do whatever we want...and you're just good for play and cleaning up after us.'

For historical purposes let me remind the younger generations of 'The second wife of Clarence Thomas who is white since he divorced the Black wife because she reminded him that he, too, was Black, and benefited from Affirmative Action which he absolutely detests...and since he is soooooooo confused over his racial-ness, he developed rather obtuse sexual perversions with coca-cola cans and those women (Black women only, of course) whom he oversaw at his ironic place of employment....the US Agency which overlooks Equal Employment Opportunity.'

He has also, since becoming a 'Supreme' (if only Diana Ross could take his place), he has become a Catholic and belongs to that church in DC that allows him to be a member of Opus Dei. This man has major psychological problems, IMHO.

I watched those hearings 19 years ago...I had smoke coming from my ears and fire from my mouth. I remember Teddy (of all people) and Biden who just let that turd off the hook. Well...at least the young women of today can see how women were treated....maybe that's the whole point...to remind them of their 'place' and if one of them gets 'uppity,' it can be brought back to haunt her after some 19 years. (While Senator Vitter is given a standing ovation when he returns to the Senate after having a prostitute diaper them so he can soil himself and get off sexually).

Anita Hill is a heroine...I hope she dismisses virginia and clarence like the annoying little gnats they are.

virginia can choke on her tea!

62. I remember those hearings as well.
Like you, I was livid at the way Anita Hill was treated - condescending remarks, insulting questions...I was shocked at Kennedy's behavior, lost all respect for Biden. Thomas was exposed as a worm (apologies to beneficial worms) squirming in the sunlight. He was then, and remains, unfit to occupy a position on the SCOTUS. That he was nominated to fill the vacancy left by Thurgood Marshall, is an insult to the memory of that great jurist.

".... In 1987, Marshall gave a controversial speech on the occasion of the bicentennial celebrations of the Constitution of the United States.<11> Marshall stated,

"the government they devised was defective from the start, requiring several amendments, a civil war, and major social transformations to attain the system of constitutional government and its respect for the freedoms and individual rights, we hold as fundamental today."..."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurgood_Marshall

Nope, thomas on SCOTUS wasn't just a step backwards, it was a fall down 3 flights of stairs.

That crazy woman, Ginny Thomas, didn't ask for an apology for - - -making false statement and making my husband's nomination to the Supreme Court so difficult ---

She asked an apology for what Anita Hill "did with husband"

Isn't that kind of strange???

I know, the whole phone call was strange. . .but the wording???

20. This Ginny Thomas seems to be a remarkably stupid person.
Why reopen this now? And doing it via a voice message that can be released? I love the presumption that Anita must be the one to apologize...a mighty big leap considering the facts.

Thomas was lucky that this didn't derail his bid for SCOTUS at the time. I always thought that the Republicans nominated him for the cynical PR cover his skin color afforded them. A no-lose nominee for Republicans...either he gets the Senate consent and becomes a reliable corporate Republican vote on the Court or they could use this as an election issue to pin the racist label on Democrats for torpedoing his nomination.

It's pretty obvious that this must be an ongoing topic of conversation at the Thomas home. The fact that they've reopened this ugly incident which allows the whole history to replay again is pretty dumb. I wonder if Ginny had a few glasses of Chablis before she decided to extend this "olive branch"?

43. She was at the American Enterprise Institute planning Bush transition ...
while husband Clarence Thomas cast deciding vote in Bush v. Gore, IIRC.

It was dumb of her to do it.
It was dumb of husband not to recuse himself.
It was dumb of Democrats not to make a big thing about it.

to the clobbering they got in 1992.

23. Could this sink Sharron Angle?
Angle said in a recent debate the justice she admires the most is Clarence Thomas.

The majority of voters probably know nothing about the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas events of so many years ago. Now they're finding out. Back then I was not involved in politics at all and was so busy with work that I didn't even know who Clarence Thomas was before the TV coverage began, and I couldn't help but see it. What seemed obvious to me was that Anita Hill was telling the truth.

It is my hope that newly-informed Nevada voters will feel the same way.

And, here now is this ridiculous situation of Thomas' wife putting herself foward

Trust that some day the whole story on Clarence the pervert will come out --

64. If that was an "olive branch"
then one wonders what Mz Thomas offers when she isn't being Holier than Thou.

Mz Thomas needs to remember that there were two or three other women who came forward with the same types of experiences but the spineless Dims didn't have them testify.

Ms Hill came off as completely credible, she was subjected to another round of sexist verbal abuse by Republicans on the panel. Throughout she remained in control and unalterable in her testimony.
She had to know she as putting her entire professional career and possibly her life on the line to give that testimony. Yet she remained a class act while Thomas and the Republicans beat her with demeaning accusations and sexism and stereotypical Repo-whining.

Much to the consternation of the Republican and probably many Democratic politicians most women even most White women, certainly working women, found Hill very believable.

Which means, Mz Thomas, they found Thomas very unbelievable.

But thanks, Mz Thomas, for reminding us of Thomas's confirmation and all that went with it.

Hill shouldn't be saying she won't apologize. She should be saying, "Ginny, you must be nuts. But then you would have to be to marry a dirt ball like Clarence. How does it feel to be married to a pervert?"

Well, something like that.

Ginny Thomas insinuated that Anita Hill should apologize. If Hill simply refuses to apologize, it leaves the outrageous insinuation in place. Saying "I stand by my testimony" means nothing when no one remembers the testimony.

My congressional representative, Nita Lowey (still in Congress!) was one of 7 Congresswomen who stormed up the steps of the Senate side of Capitol Hill to demand hearings on Anita Hill's charges.
It was captured in a photograph. (If anyone has that famous photograph, let's all see it.)

The "Magnificent Seven":
Barbara Boxer
Nita Lowey
Patsy Mink
Eleanor Holmes Norton (District of Columbia delegate)
Pat Schroeder
Louise Slaughter
Jolene Unsoeld

117. Prof. Anita Hill sacrificed her personal life to warn us about Clarence Thomas ---
and to awaken America to the issue of sexual harassment!!

My love and thanks to her!!

118. Of COURSE Hill thought it was a prank: The REAL Ginny Thomas wouldn't do such a stupid thing
especially after nearly twenty years! She probably figured that the culprit was either an aspiring James O'Keefe or some students getting their zany on. So she called the campus cops--impersonating the wife of a supreme court justice is NOT a laughing matter!

120. Thomas should not have beeen confirmed. He played the
race card big time. Then Biden, gulped and it was all over.

122. Ginny Thomas the scab puller
Thanks to his clueless wife, after 19 years for the "dust to settle", it's back to minute one for Clarence Thomas. For those who may have forgotten or are unfamiliar with Anita Hill's congressional testimony against Thomas, it's now been revisted. Along with Ginny Thomas' questionable fundraising activities. Anita Hill gets the last laugh. It doesn't get any better!

124. Recommend -- #309 What Anita Hill did took guts - she warned us about Thomas and his attitudes
Especially his attitudes toward women.
And some of my friends are naive enough to believe that "they will never overturn Roe v. Wade."

Yeah, sure.

And I remember a time in this country when a corporation was just that -- a corporation.

arrogant and ... stupid. They certainly deserve each other. I hope that bringing this story up now will remind everyone of just how nasty Republicans can be.

Thomas should never have been confirmed to the USSC - on qualifications alone. What a travesty that whole process was! And yes, I remember those hearings well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_Thomas#Anita_Hill_allegations

Good for Anita Hill! Then and now! She is the one who deserves an apology. It took real courage for her to stand up - virtually before the whole world - and testify as to being sexually harassed by Thomas. Biden's role at the time was certainly NOT one of his finer hours and one reason why I did not support his candidacy for the Presidency. He let ALL of us down. But he was not the only Dem to do so at the time.

In good part thanks to that behavior, we got the infamous results of Bush v Gore and Citizens United, among others.

of justice than Fox News is of truth. Even if what Anita Hill said isn't true, and I believe it is true, it doesn't change the fact that Thomas is one of the worst justices in history.

129. Ms. Hill is one of the smartest women in the country, worked hard to get where she
is, brought up a situation that made Thomas look seem dumber than he is...and was crucified for it. Thomas had nothing but the old canard, the "race card" to pull him out of the fire, Hill has class, poise and intellect, Thomas is little more than a slug...now where's that salt in the back of the cabinet?

131. Ginny Thomas is not a smart woman
I suspected this for years, given the fact that she was married to a man who had no business being on the Supreme Court and was, in fact, their "Step 'n Fetch" token black who didn't appear to have an independent thought in his head. But I had no proof that she was stupid until this week. Nineteen long years after the thought crossed my mind, Mrs. Clarence Thomas, Ginny to God knows who, proved it without a shadow of a doubt.

As Dan Savage so amusingly pointed out, no one remembered. There's a whole new generation out there busily googling, Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas and getting to find out once again, what an awful, awful creature that man is and there was no reason anyone would have thought to go back there, Ginny, but you just had to. I bet you don't even know what google is, do you, Ginny Dear? Well, you didn't until now.

138. Clarance Thomas makes bad decisions...except for marrying this woman. THEY DESERVE ONE ANOTHER!!!
Thomas idea of extending an olive branch translates into calling the victim 20 years later (out of the blue) and accusing her of lying?

Republican DECEPTIONS are just mind boggling.

139. Did anyone ever believe Clarence?
Even the senators who voted for him knew he did it. They just wanted a wooden puppet on the bench and they got it. Now we know his wife is stupid as well. Perfect match.
