Florida can't avoid having a Tea Bag senator.
The Republican in the Florida senate race is Marco Rubio, a teabagger, who has a wide lead.

The Democrat is Kendrick Meek and the Independent is Charlie Crist.

Crist is running second and Meek is running a poor third.

Basically, we're screwed. Meek and Crist will split the sane vote leaving us with a new insane senator named Rubio.

It seems that the lunatics are beating us at every turn. Surrender isn't an option. But neither is winning. There just doesn't seem to be any way to beat the morons in this country who have bought into the tons of crap being fed to them every day.

I'm disgusted, disgruntled, disillusioned and dismayed. Maybe I need to go ease out in the Keys for a while.

1. I voted for Meek today.
I struggled with "do I vote my principles or for the candidate who has a better chance." I voted my principles.

11. I never trusted Charlie Crist...
And my motto has been the worst possible Democrat is better than the best possible republican. Liberals and moderates in Florida could blow the doors of Rubio's Washington express. But Crist cast himself as an Independent, ran to the left of Rubio, made a few right moves as Governor, and carries enough support to put Rubio over the top.

People who will vote for Meek are not going to vote for Christ or Rubio. Those in the center that move this way or that depending on the election were convinced to stay in the center.

If Republicans had planned for a race that would guarantee a Republican win, they could not have done it better. I'm not saying they did. But the result is going to be the same. I understand GQ already has Rubio as one of the power players in Washington.

This is something to watch for in the future. Run a moderate Republican as an independent, to soak up the centrists votes may very well be the another way of ensuring a Republican win in a lot of states.

13. I Have Lived In Florida Since 1970
I went to Florida public schools, Florida universities, and received a graduate degree in political science from a Florida university and worked on several statewide campaigns. I would defer to you , as you are a Californian, when it comes to Florida politics. When Barbara Boxer is fighting for her political life in solidly blue California how can one expect a Democrat to win in purple/leans red Florida

Meek was the sacrificial lamb in this race because prominent Florida Democrats assumed Crist was a shoo in which he was until he was Tea Bagged.

The die is cast. Crist or Rubio would have handily beat Meek in this environment.

Florida has always been a tough nut for Democrats. That's why only three Democrats have won senate seats or governors races in the past thirty years and two of them were both senator and governor.

Now to Rubio. He's Jeb Bush's protege and is being groomed for much larger things.

10. Why Would He Caucus With The Party That Rejected Him And The Party That's In The Minority?
He's trying to get as many indy votes and soft Republicant and soft Democratic votes as possible because he knows hardcore Dems and Reps will vote for their party's nominees.

The Republicans will put Rubio on the ticket in 016 or 020 to divide the Hispanic vote without which Democrats can not win. They don't even have to get a majority of Hispanic votes. They just need to approach the 35% -40% thresh hold Bush* reached in his first election. Our demographic advantage on which our future hopes are based on will be in tatters.

What a mess.

He is a Repuke. And anyone who thinks voting for him is a good idea, well then thanks for not supporting real Democrats. I mean this is after all Democratic Underground and not CharLIE Crist Underground. He got into this race to take votes from Meek so Rubio would win. End of discussion. He had no qualms allowing Rubio to pull his schtick for years in Tallahassee. Now, I'm Independent. He's a Repuke. He was here at the station a few weeks ago and I found him even more slippery than before. He's a slimeball.

Must be nice to live in a parallel universe where cliches and emoticons substitute for actual thought.

Here's a link to pollster.com that shows Meek losing by twenty two points with the election less than two weeks away :

Maybe that $100.00 would be better spent on a comfortable pair of shoes or sneakers for you to wear as you canvass the state for Meek. With your enthusiasm you should be able to close the gap.

I am in a pissed off fucking mood.I'm not in the mood to defend myself from character attacks. I had to sell all the furniture in my home to buy food and put gas in a seventeen year old car a friend lent me that I am driving because I had to sell my car to raise cash. You really should think about who you choose to verbally abuse or not abuse on the internet. Oh, I have to give my home back to the bank on November 30. If it wasn't for the kindness, sratch that, the largesse of friends I would be fucking homeless. I literally have nothing to lose which is a kind of freedom.

As to the Pollyanna remark. That was aimed at those on this thread who said a Rubio victory is no big deal as he will be revealed as the lightweight he is. They said the same thing about George Bush* and Ronald Reagan.

I could give a rip. Nobody is going to give me my car back, my home back, my life back.

67. Surely
you are a genius in your own mind.

Quote John Adams all you like, I'd bet it he was here he would say that one should vote with their principles.

68. I Have Always Been Civil To You But You Contine To Verbally Assault Me
"Quote John Adams all you like, I'd bet it he was here he would say that one should vote with their principles."

I have been saying that ad nausuem and ad infinitum but you choose to ignore it. Why?

69. Then please
that's TWICE you've accused me of verbally "assaulting" you. If that is the case then hit the mod alert button.

It's not my fault that you're not able to handle the truth.

Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 07:03 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
What truth. Every strawman you erected I have knocked down. As I said I have been civil to you. You have been anything but civil to me. It's a shame you lack the capacity for sober self reflection to see it. It's really sad.

72. Then stop screaming "verbal assault" when there is none.
I think we should just ignore one another, as it's clear there is no middle ground.

73. Well
If you don't think "telling me I'm a genius in my own mind" is not a verbal assault there is nothing I can do to disabuse you of that notion.

And I only hit alert on posts that are homophobic, anti-semitic, bigoted, racist et cetera but saying a fellow poster is a "
genius in his own mind" is a violation of Democratic Underground rules, ergo:

"Do not post personal attacks or engage in name-calling against other individual members of this discussion board. Even very mild personal attacks are forbidden."

All our problems are solved by voting for the damned stinking republican Crist?

&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Meek is about as fine a liberal progressive as we can get.
And when Meek beats Crist in the election, we will finally be done with Crist.

Getting rid of Crist is a huge bonus.

And the damned silly Rubio will be, if elected, shown to be a fool to even the most foolish of pig-headed idiots that we are forced to share the air with.

Rubio will do like Palin and resign in a few short years. And that will be two republicans down and out.

Vote Meek. Be proud of liberals and vote for liberals.

31. Crist is a Tea Bagger! He promted Palin, you know.
Last night: "I think that Obamacare was off the charts, was wrong. It taxed too much, has mandates that are probably unconstitutional and it's not the way to go.And it was rammed through."

Florida needs to learn how to play the long game and eventually have elections like other states do, without 'special circumstances' in each and every cylce.

32. Still love you Blue

You have been spot on with your critique of CharLIE Crist from the get-go. It's funny 4 years ago we all were fighting to keep that liar out of the Governor's Mansion. Now all of a sudden he's so wonderful. Nope - not buying it.

53. Stopping Rubio is job one
I've lived in Florida long enough to cast many, many votes for opponents of Charlie Crist. Like, every time he's run for statewide office (I remember when he was "Chaingang Charlie").

But I may have to actually vote for Crist this time, if on election day he's the best and only chance to stop Rubio. Rubio is going to make Paula Hawkins (see, told you I've lived here a while) look like Barbara Boxer.

And like many here have stated, Rubio becoming a US Senator is a perfect staging area for him to run for President. 2016 for sure, maybe even 2012. For sure he would wind up being a top VP candidate in 2012.

I know full well what baggage Crist has, and I like Meek, but if on election day, it looks like the only way to stop Rubio is to vote for Crist, I'm voting for Crist.

Rubio is charismatic, handsome, has a great life story, will draw Hispanic votes in a national race (the ones that Republicans have been shedding for the last ten years), and is batshit crazy. As a President, he'll make W look center left.

I hate it, and I've delayed sending in my early voting ballot...but my vote will have to go to whoever has a shot at blocking Rubio. Right now that's Crist. I hope somehow it changes in the next two weeks, but I don't see how Meek can make it up. Really want to be wrong about that.
