Why Clarence's Wife Called Anita: Even Relatives don't understand - insight from Jacob Bernstein
Even relatives tell Jacob Bernstein they don't understand why Ginni Thomas phoned Anita Hill. But for Thomas, who's sampled cult-like Lifespring and the Tea Party, it's perfectly in character.

When news broke that Clarence Thomas’ wife, Ginni, had left a message for Anita Hill asking her to apologize for accusing the Supreme Court justice of sexual harassment, almost no one could believe it.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning African-American journalist Karen Hunter, appearing on MSNBC, theorized that Ginni was in an Ambien stupor. Gawker wondered if she was drunk.

Even members of Ginni’s family appear to be somewhat perturbed that she chose to raise her husband’s turbulent 1991 confirmation hearing again.
Reached by The Daily Beast on Wednesday afternoon, Ginni’s brother Russell Lamp sounded pretty annoyed that his sister had reopened the wound. “I don’t believe it needs to be in the press in any shape or form,” he said. “It was very difficult for my mother and father who are now passed away, and I’m sorry that Ginni decided to talk more about it.”

Then he hung up.

Ginni’s aunt Betty Jacobs, who found out about the phone call when she saw it on the news, said simply, “I’m confused.”

Then she hung up.

39. My theory, too. She is still troubled because she's trying to pretend she doesn't believe it
while down inside she realizes the image she has created of her husband is not true to reality. So she called Hill in an attempt to blow the issue up, making it public again so the rest of the world can be as troubled as she is, and maybe the truth will emerge.

If she really believed her husband, she wouldn't still be obsessing decades later about it.

3. Firing up the base re: Hill
Just one more stupid move from a crazy person who is facing her own demons come to light.
Reminding us of the whole Clarence Thomas Senate confirmation hearings just unearths
the emotions we felt at the injustice in the treatment of Anita Hill, a paternalistic Senate
and stupidity of putting someone like him into a lifetime office like the Supreme Court.

It was my political awakening and started me on the road to speaking up and out.

Thanks for the reminder Ginni...I was feeling complacent again til now.

Get your ballot sent to you if you don't want to make the effort to get out. Just vote Democratic.
Being a politician is a career, not a hobby. Many of the people running on the TP side of the aisle
aren't qualified to be hired most places and would laughed out of offices. Don't hire inexperience.
It's bad still for this country.

More on the other women who came forward testifying about CT:

She either suspects he's cheating on her and/or he's become distant and withholding. She called Ms. Hill because she's fishing for clues.

5. Some questions
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 09:05 AM by ashling
Was it ever likely that she would get an apology?

NO

Was it inevitable that this would end up in the news?

Yes

Is it probable that this will fuel rage among the teabag crowd?

DEFNITELY

Will they be more likely to send money to poor wittle Ginny's cause?

Probably

Was this calculated?

???? - I'm just sayin' .... ???

10. I think the part she didn't count on was the rage she fueled among those of us who
remember those hearings and the awful way Hill was treated. Not to mention all those who are too young to remember but spent yesterday furiously Googling and then getting pissed off.

Plus, I'm guessing some of her Teabagging racist buddies didn't realize she was married to *gasp* THAT "Mr. Thomas", i.e. a BLACK man. (In fact, I'll wager 85% of Teaturds couldn't pick any of the Supremes out of a line up and had no idea, until yesterday, that one of them wasn't lily white like them.)

6. Perhaps Ginni
is just realizing she married one of the biggest losers of all time. She is just trying to back up and put a bit of polish on the old asshat. Anita has beauty, brains and great class. I get the impression that Ginni is jealous that Anita never wanted her husband. Think about it. Here is Anita who has it all and she turns down Clarence. Not only turns him down, but publicly shows him to be the dumb fool that he really is and at the same time giving a great bitchslap to Ginni. Or not! Perhaps Ginni is really just the mental case she appears to be. It is all so confusing.

The GOP scraped the bottom of the barrel to get him.

He's not smart enough to be a Justice of the Peace, much less a Supreme Court justice.

13. I think this was a very calculated move.
Remember the same day this story broke the story about Thomas and Scalia participating in the Koch Brothers little seminar in Aspen (I think Aspen) came out. I had a feeling she was trying to distract from that. The fact Scalia and Thomas were fraternizing with people that directly benefited from a decision they recently ruled on is disconcerting at best. Also, Ginni runs a 501(c)-something that is getting big bucks to put into political campaigns. This was calculated but I don't think she is crazy or stupid.

21. Trying to look good to her fellow right wing extremists
I think in her own mind Ginni Thomas was trying to make herself look good amongst her fellow right wing extremists. She wants them to believe that she offered an olive branch to Anita Hill. Ginni thinks that she is going to be commended for making the first move for reconciliation with Anita Hill.

But make no mistake, *I* think Anita Hill has handled this magnificently. She was right to hand this over to the proper authorities and she is right to state that she should never apologize for having told the truth!

Ginni just cannot process the idea that Clarence screwed around on her.

22. My theory is that Thomas assumed that Hill would not offer an apology. So,
So, she felt that her wording of the message, which presumed Hill's lying, would carry more weight in public opinion that Hill's statements. Thomas grossly misjudged the effects of her initiative.

30. I'd love to HEAR the tape - was it a tad slurred, or crisp and chirpy?
And I think that she had a plan for WHY she was doing this is giving her too much credit.

I agree with daligirl519 and others who are thinking drunk dialing (or I love the Ambien stupor reference!) Those of us who have been there know that something can seem like just the most brilliant idea in the world and don't even give a thought to any possible repercussions, and have had to live with the humiliation once we sobered up.
