The elevation (again) to the spotlight of Anita Hill causes us to again consider Clarence Thomas

He was a minimally accomplished jurist and a right wing kook when he was tapped by GHW Bush to sit in Thurgood Marshall's seat. The color of his skin was undeniably a factor, as his judicial skills were minimal at best.

But all of that is, in many, many ways beside the point. He was a serial sexual harrasser. He held in contempt the women with whom he worked and over whom he held a degree of power. He was a lecherous man. He spoke his imagined sexual prowess is circumstances where such discussions were beyond inappropriate.

As we look back, we cannot help but assess his judicial record since assuming the august post of Supreme Court Justice. He has been a judicial extremist to the far right of polite society. He rules as if he is angry with those who saw him for what he was and wishes to extract his form of revenge.

Then we are caused to look again at his wife. A far right fringe political activist. A woman in league with the extremes of of out-of-the-mainstream right wing causes and groups. A woman who is now front and center in the leadership of the teabagger movement.

There is little we can do about any of this apart from recognize it and speak about it. The legacy he was given before he was seated, the legacy of a dirty man, is still an appropriate one. It is how history will consider him. Small, dirty, minimally accomplished, extreme, unhelpful, and undistinguished.

Sorry, Judge Thomas, but that's all you get.
