I keep his recordings around.

On edit: Here's a good example:

On more edit: This take of Con Alma with Sonny Stitt on tenor is absolutely classic!

4. Thanks for the links!
My husband and I were lucky enough to see him live more than once! It has been a while, though...

We loved it when he would introduce the band...to each other!

15. I got to see him too.

The first time was after my then girl friend's senior prom. I was a freshman. We left her prom after the entertainment (the Shirelles, who were great) and drove from Lawn Guyland to the Metropole (just months before it morphed from jazz edifice into a topless bar.) We had some trouble getting in, as the girls were under the drinking age of 18. So was I, but no one asked me. "We just want to see Dizzy!" I was insisting, as he coincidentally walked by the door, and glanced at us. The group was the same as in the Tin Tin Deo video, with James Moody, Kenny Barron, Chris White and Rudy Collins.

Later he sat down at our booth. He "put the moves" on my girl friend. I reminded him, "jail bait" and he glided away. I saw him other times and we talked a bit about "pop," the bopper's word for weed.

He always put on a great show. He always dazzled musically.

16. Thanks for the great story!
I don't imagine too many people can say that he put the moves on their girlfriends!

17. LOL! That remains to be seen. Think about it.
There could very well be lots of people that can say he put the moves on their girl friend. :)

5. It's my middle kid's birthday too...
And he's also a musician.

I've always loved Dizzy! I'm a big fan of Google's home page changes. When it's plain old Google, I sigh...

Happy birthday, Dizzy!

8. They got the cheeks in there!
True story: Diz was on his way to the house where we lived, being brought by a friend of mine. We were only in our early 20's - but were major jazz fans despite the un-hipness of that in 1977.

He would have met his real fans there.

But just as he and my friend who invited him were leaving, the venue where he had just played told him they had some sort of "in your honor" awful function he must attend.

He told my friend he would rather party at our place, but.......

Alas!

18. Actually there wer about 5 of us on hand when we got the call...
....that he was on his way.

We were sooooo excited! Probably the most concentrated example of 21 year old jazz fans around in 1977!
