Video: Howard Dean in Denver May 10, long interview with local station.
It was on the Aaron Harber show. I am about half way through. It looks like at least 25 minutes. Very good interview.

He is pretty candid about the plans for the 50 states, his views on primaries, etc.

Here is the link. It says it is to air on May 25 and 27 locally on KDBI TV.

http://www.harbertv.com/index2.htm

Here is an article with some quotes from that interview.

Dean said Thursday the days of the $60 million political convention coronations are numbered

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean said Thursday the days of the $60 million political convention coronations are numbered and he's studying ways to make them more relevant to average people.

Dean said politicians need to find more ways to connect with voters, going door to door, instead of depending on television to deliver their messages. He said next year's convention in Denver will be different.

"We've got to change the way we do conventions in this country. I'm looking to try to make this a transitional convention, in the sense that the day of the $50-$60 million convention is coming to a close. The day of one-way campaigns where we do everything on television, and we don't listen to people before, is coming to a close. We need to be knocking on doors, talking to them directly, asking their opinions," Dean said during an interview on the Aaron Harber show on KDBI-TV.

One thing surprised me. He is not in favor of regional or national primaries as it would hurt candidates with less resources.

1. Brief discussions of Unity 08, unions...employer based health care...
candid and lots of common sense. He thinks we will end up with single payer care by expanding Medicare...but not all at once. Says right wing will call it socialized medicine, which it isn't.

Harber asks him about the Medicare Advantage plan which the Republicans are enthusiastic about. Dean grins and says they are enthusiastic because they wrote it along with the drug companies.

7. How About Shorter Campaign Seasons?
I've always like the British model...a 90 day election season...a mad dash and that's it. We're now in a 24/7/365 campaign season...no sooner does the last election wrap than the next is off and rolling. There's an entire industry of pundits and pollsters and campaign aparachniks who have turned this into a big money grab (cause how else do their salaries get paid???) along with the corporate media that uses this elongated campaign like American Idol.

Why can't the primaries be moved back to April, May and June...where they once were...with a small convention in July...followed by the "actual" campaign after Labor Day. Have the party set later filing and closing dates on these primaries that would also compress the cycle, the money spent and the burn-out we all go through.

I have mixed feelings about regional primaries. The current system needs major changes, and regional primaries would be a more efficient use of resources than running from state to state or trying to cover all 50 in one big party. However, which region goes first? And what is a region? Contiguous states or ones with similar economic interests?

Cheers...

9. I didn't see all this push to be first in the 2004 primary.
Florida was quite happy indeed to be on March 9th. A lot of us had conversations with them, but it did no good. They said a late primary was best. Now the same people are pushing like crazy for an early one. The Dems were all for it even if the Republicans did it. Considering our candidate dropped out February 18, our vote did not matter. But not a single person cared then.

Pardon me if I feel odd about the sudden rush to the front of the line....and trust me Florida Dems were complicit. One even said they had no loyalty to the DNC. Not sure what that means....well, yes, I am sure I just ain't gonna say it.

11. The Money Got A Lot Better
Winning in '06 changed a lot of things...including the money flowing into campaigns and the money that is generated by them. If anyone is behind a lot of these early dates, it's television that sees this as Christmas in January or February...filling what is usually their deadest sales time of the year with dozens of campaign ads from not just local, but national campaigns and 527 groups. I'm sure various states were prodded to move up their dates with promises of large media buys and coverage.

Also with it come the money from networks for the silly debates and other dog and pony shows as the intense coverage is worth millions to every campaign...and exposure in the early primaries make kingmakers out of various state parties. In that manner, I don't see it as being such a bad thing.

They moved up the Illinois primary to February...from April...but I'm still not sure it'll make a real difference as I have a feeling the nomination game will be a done deal by the time it gets here.

I'm with you about the rush to the front...I'm already tired of this campaign.

Cheers...

12. Dean's chapter of a new book: "How the Internet Taught Me that You have the Power"
I was just reading at MyDD about this new book that is coming out in September. I am sure it will be moving, memory-evoking, and both happy and painful.

14. Oh Boy!!~ Did I ever enjoy that interview!
I like that Aaron Harbar, too..what a sweetie.

It was dejevu listening to them in my home state and city of Denver. Dean sounded really confident and knowledgeable about MAJOR CHANGES he and the DNC are making for our Par-Ty!~

I like that Dean spoke well of all our candidates..the whole thing was super positive just like Dean deals with everthing. He admits when he hasn't figured something out yet but just know he will!

He doesn't want to call them "red states or blue states" but a "playing field" and "you have to show up"..and by Jove he's showin' up, shore nuff! "We're in partnership with FIFTY STATES"!

Mentioning the voters should do the vetting and not the so-called press was brilliant. "Give us a shot and we'll step up and listen!

It seems the community of Denver is excited about having us there for our Democratic Convention!~~

That was just an excellent interview, mad, thank you!

Our values..1)Fairness
2)Toughness
3)Fiscally Conservative
And behave in your life as to what your values are and you won't be making "sacrifices" but a way of life that's beneficial to our Planet, fellow inhabitants and our decendents.

It was a good interview. I like the way they sparred with smiles about the..correct me if I say it wrong..added value tax? Don't have time to watch today to check.

Someone at the blog said they would transcribe it. I will keep an eye out.

16. Yeah, I wasn't sure about that
especially at first..I thought they were saying "value attacks". :)

Thanks for the "eye out"..I took notes but would really like to read it, too.

Got to say how much I like Dean's blue shirt and green tie..great combo for a subliminal color scheme! }(

18. I had it backwards..
Edited on Tue May-22-07 06:55 PM by madfloridian
It's "value added tax", and I had to look it up. Finally found this at Bartleby's.

"value-added tax

A tax on the value added to a product at each stage of its production, from raw materials to finished product. Widely employed in Europe, value-added taxes have the advantage (for governments) of raising revenue “invisibly,” that is, without appearing as taxes on the bill paid by the consumer."

I agree with you on the blue/green combination.

:-)

On Edit..zidzi this was meant to reply to you, but it did not appear that way. Sorry about that. Looks I replied to myself.
