What did Rahm say, and when did he say it?
"Emanuel famously called health-care advocates who were planning to target conservative Democrats "fucking retarded"—not the type of comment that endears a candidate to voters in a heavily Democratic city."

Just curious because I goofed up and had a thread locked for taking-off from his quote. At least I thought the WH Chief of Staff was correctly quoted. A quote that made history. Some responders said that wasn't what he said.

I got an email, a DCCC plea for contribution, and a statement e-signed by Rahm. "...Contribute $5, $10 or more before Midnight Tonight to our Two Weeks Out ad buy fund ...."

I was floored by the nerve of it and wanted to discuss it. If quoted correctly, he was calling ME that pejorative.

Please clarify where I was off-base with this historic and telling quote by the WH Chief of Staff, if so. Links appreciated.

1. I wish the outside $$$ that was spent targeting Sen. Lincoln was saved until the GE
What a wasted opportunity.

3. He called a TACTIC "fucking retarded"
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 03:27 PM by Denzil_DC
- the RW press reveled in misquoting him, and as usual, others swallowed it:

The friction was laid bare in August when Mr. Emanuel showed up at a weekly strategy session featuring liberal groups and White House aides. Some attendees said they were planning to air ads attacking conservative Democrats who were balking at Mr. Obama's health-care overhaul.

"F—ing retarded," Mr. Emanuel scolded the group, according to several participants. He warned them not to alienate lawmakers whose votes would be needed on health care and other top legislative items.

4. I agree with you, it did take
a lot of nerve to have him of all people ask us to contribute. I stopped contributing to the DCCC etc. and only give to individual candidates directly. I don't want the little money that I have to go to some DLCer or Blue Dog who is proud to vote with the GOP. I only give to real dems who are willing to stick with dem principles.

7. Yeah, delete his email. Easy enough. Why the need for all this Melodrama?

6. Slightly inaccurate
As someone else said. The general representation was that he was characterizing the strategy or action, not the people who were advocating it. Kinda splitin' hairs but whatever.

I got a similar letter and I laughed. I really wondered if the DCCC was that out of touch. Not everyone is a big Rahm hater, but I'd bet there aren't that many that are particularly swayed by him either.
