GOP lawmaker looks to increase scrutiny of Obama

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101021/ap_on_go_co/us_issa_gop_watchdog

WASHINGTON – Anyone who's spent much time near parked cars has likely heard Rep. Darrell Issa's stern voice: "Protected by Viper. Stand back." After next month's election, Americans may be hearing a lot more from the millionaire congressman and car alarm inventor.

Already President Barack Obama's chief antagonist in Congress, Issa, R-Calif., would take over the main House investigating committee and control its probes of the White House and the federal bureaucracy if Republicans win back the House.

One liberal Democrat, Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota, predicts that Issa (pronounced EYE'-suh) will use subpoena power as chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee to conduct a "witch hunt in an effort to bring down the Obama administration."

Issa already is the bearer of daily anti-Obama sound bites on cable TV. Over a 10-day period in July, for example, his schedule showed 14 written statements and 11 television appearances.

2. Ah jeez...
How much more thoroughly could they scrutinize/harass this man?

I'm sick to death of the idiotic RW idea that bringing down Obama, the continued ruining of America through obstruction, is somehow helping "We the People" and winning somehow.

The 'Yay team' mentality is going to be the death of us all!

6. Yeah that's what
I'm worried about. Personally I find the shenanigans and the insane delusions of the tea party and birthers to be a freaking national embarrassment. But we'll get more of that and it will be stamped with official seal of approval should the nutbag Republicans regain control of the house or worse senate. We need to vote for democrats and progressives if for no other reason to turn back the rising tide of complete insanity. And I admit, I'd love to see those freaks lose and lick their pathetic racist bigoted wounds.... or better disappear altogether.

But that's just me.

I'll go back to saying not much again in a sec.....

:)

11. +1000
When Limbaugh says that he hopes that Obama fails, he's overlooking the fact that with Obama- as POTUS- goes the rest of the country as well. However, it seems like Republicans are willing to let the country be destroyed as long as they can lord over whatever is left. :puke:

5. He's the slimeball who led the campaign that recalled Gov. Gray Davis
Not my district, but I donated to his Democratic opponent, Howard Katz (and got a nice hand-written thankyou card).

Issa has promised to double the committee's investigative staff to go after dems--despite telling Glenn Beck that voters should throw out any legislator who supports bigger government.

8. Of course the Pukes will
The Pukes never miss an opportunity to strike out at the Dems whereas the Dems with both houses and the presidency let the most corrupt and crooked regime in the history of this nation skate with no investigation of their overreach.

The Dems try to be fair to a fault, the Repukes just try to win by any means possible.

9. Issa is a car thief with multiple arrests
from Wikipedia:

Issa was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the grandson of Lebanese immigrants. He describes himself as having been "a rotten young kid."<4> Issa dropped out of high school<5> and at 17 enlisted for a three-year tour in the Army, serving as a bomb disposal technician. Issa further recounted being part of the security entourage for President Nixon during the 1971 World Series, despite Nixon never having attended the event. Issa left the Army nearly two years early after being stripped of his duties as a bomb specialist.<6>

A retired Army sergeant claimed that Issa stole a Dodge sedan from an Army post near Pittsburgh in 1971. The sergeant said he recovered the car after confronting and threatening him. Issa denied the allegation and no charges were filed.<7><8> In 1972, Issa and his brother allegedly stole a red Maserati sports car from a car dealership in Cleveland. He and his brother were indicted for car theft, but the case was dropped.<7><8> That same year, Issa was convicted in Michigan for possession of an unregistered gun. He received three months probation and paid a $204 fine.<9>

...

On December 28, 1979, Issa and his brother allegedly faked the theft of Issa's Mercedes Benz sedan. Issa and his brother were charged for grand theft auto, but the case was dropped by prosecutors for lack of evidence. Later, Issa and his brother were charged for misdemeanors, but that case was not pursued by prosecutors. Issa accused his brother of stealing the car, and said that the experience with his brother was the reason he went into the car alarm business.<7><8>

A day after a court order was issued, giving Issa control of automotive alarm company A.C. Custom over an unpaid $60,000 debt, Issa allegedly carried a cardboard box containing a handgun into the office of A.C. Custom executive, Jack Frantz, and told Frantz he was fired. In a 1998 newspaper article, Frantz said Issa had invited him to hold the gun and claimed extensive knowledge of guns and explosives from his Army service. In response, Issa said, "Shots were never fired. ... I don't recall having a gun. I really don't. I don't think I ever pulled a gun on anyone in my life."<9>

(I know this is more than 3 paragraphs, but I believe Wikipedia permits this level of excerpting)

12. the truth is Obama could be a stupid thing to focus on
because the truth is Obama has improved things and even right wingers can point to things Obama has done that made their lives better. If we get out the real record instead of letting the right dominate the message, the GOP would be picking a fight they can't win.

13. Go right ahead, Darrell. I dare ya!
If he thinks all his extra "scrutiny" is going to go over well with anyone other than the teabagger lunatics, he's far more stupid than I thought. People don't want their Congressmen/women investigating the President. They want them fixing the fucking mess that is our economy. They want them creating jobs and fixing our crumbling infrastructure, not digging into Michelle's underwear drawer, like they did with Hillary.

I remember how swimmingly well their last presidential witch hunt went. Oh, wait! It didn't. IIRC, President Clinton's popularity went UP with impeachment, and it's still up nearly 15 years later. Issa is behaving just like Newt Gingrich. And, he'll end up like Gingrich in the end--disgraced and exposed as a hypocrite.
