RNC, low on cash, raises $10M in Sept.

The Republican National Committee found itself in debt at the end of September, fundraising totals show, after it raised $9.8 million but ended the month with $4.6 million in obligations and only $3.4 million cash on hand.

An announcement by the RNC on Thursday noted the committee had also taken $2.5 million from its line of credit, but emphasized a record number of new donors and the additional $4.25 million raised during the first two weeks of October.

"Thanks to our base of loyal donors and the hundreds of thousands of new donors who have joined our cause, we have been able to tout one of the most successful fundraising efforts in committee history," said RNC Chairman Michael Steele in a statement. "The tremendous financial support we have received over the past 22 months will allow all of our candidates ... to restore principled and fiscally responsible leadership to the halls of government."

The Democratic National Committee, meanwhile, earned $13.4 million in September, and carries a debt of $7.7 million.

Steele, who has been criticized in the past for mismanaging the committee's budget, will likely discuss these numbers during a scheduled appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" this Sunday.
