MSNBC: Gay student teacher gets Oregon job back
updated 10/21/2010 7:46:38 PM ET

A gay student teacher will be reinstated to his teaching position in the Beaverton School District under an agreement reached between Lewis & Clark College and the school district.

Seth Stambaugh, a Lewis & Clark Grad School student teacher, was removed from Sexton Mountain Elementary School in September following a complaint by a parent, based on a conversation Stambaugh had with a student about his marital status in which he stated it would be illegal for him to marry because he would choose to marry a man.

<snip>

Stambaugh will resume his student teaching duties at Sexton Mountain Elementary School next Thursday, returning him to his regular Thursday and Friday schedule.

<snip>

Earlier this week, 22 parents of students at the school wrote a letter in support of Stambaugh, calling on the district to reinstate the student teacher, whom they said had "positive rapport" with his students.

1. How about that?
Sometimes the good guys do win, when all is said and done.

I'm especially pleased that the parents came to his defense.

Recommended.

:hi: Heidi!

11. People move to Beaverton to get away from those damned liberals.
There has been a veritable shit-storm of blow-back on this issue—as well there should have been. I know all the teachers at Sexton Mountain wrote and signed a letter in support of Seth. It's good to hear that there were parents willing to jump the district's jello on their asinine behavior, as well.

12. I'm glad to hear that he was reinstated.
Student teaching is, of course, not a job. School districts and school sites do not choose who gets to be a student teacher. TEACHERS agree to take a student teacher from a university, or not. It's good to see the district and the university join together to do the right thing:

We are moving forward with our common values and principles of equity, respect and inclusion.

14. Again -- It is NOT "illegal" to marry the same gender
Is there a fine? Is it a misdemeanor ? a felony ?

IT'S NOT ILLEGAL !

16. Have a definition:

Fines and criminal classification are irrelevant.

17. ??
I really hope you just forgot the sarcasm emoticon or something..

Either that or your having fun with syntax because in this country, and this time, two males or two females cannot "legally" enter a binding marriage. Which would make a marriage of that kind...Illegal...No fines, no prison, you just can't do it.

19. Soooo
When we talk about LEGALIZING gay marriage, we should actually just say, it's time to recognize gay marriage?

Also in legal terms. DOMA defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman. Wouldn't that mean any other marriage would not be considered...legal?

To say it's Unrecognized but not Illegal is to parse words on a subject that doesn't need that type of parsing..

but ny state will not give me the rights of marriage.

21. Not hard to get at all
Edited on Fri Oct-22-10 06:38 PM by DFab420
My grandmother had a ceremony in D.C a few years back. But it's only LIKE a marriage.

Would be nice if we could just call it that....but legally you can't. Because of DOMA which defines marriage in a legal sense.

*Again, I think we are just caught up in the syntax of it, which is what I was originally asking the above poster about. If he was trying to be funny in a syntax sort of way, or if he had no real problem with the way the law of the land stands now...

22. Actually, your grandmother can be LEGALLY married in DC
It would be "unrecognized," but not illegal, in most other parts of the country.

I'm with Priyanka on this. I'm not quite sure why you're so up in arms on insisting that gay marriage is illegal.

25. Certainly the issue is recognising gay marriage, not legalising it.
I'm quite sure there are numerous gay couples who have married one another without the intervention or acknowledgement of the state. Are you saying they're not married?
