I can't believe even BUSH said this. If this was his biggest failure, it should be evident to
anyone that he cares NOTHING about ordinary working Americans.

George W. Bush Reveals His Biggest Failure Was Not Privatizing Social Security
by Elyse Siegel

Former President George W. Bush signaled on Thursday that he sees not privatizing Social Security as his greatest failure from the eight years he served in the White House, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The unpopular Republican leader made the suggestion while speaking at a trade conference in the Windy City, where he discussed his legacy and also offered a glimpse into what readers can expect from his forthcoming memoir, Decision Points.

"I would like to be remembered as a guy who had a set of priorities, and was willing to live by those priorities," explained Bush. "In terms of accomplishments, my biggest accomplishment is that I kept the country safe amidst a real danger."

Bush poked fun at himself in addressing how his thoughts will be delivered in his memoir.

"I have written a book," he said. "This will come as quite a shock to some. They didn't think I could read, much less write." (well, he has that right.)

1. Maybe this 'misstep' by W will help some folks see...
that the GOP still do not want to help us. If W had privatized Social Security, it would have been a huge disaster. BUT, to see how the world has cratered in the last few years AND STILL SAY WHAT HE IS SAYING, pure STUPIDITY!!!! He still doesn't get it.

But, when your daddy is rich and all your brothers and you are rich, who cares whether Social Security would have crashed or not.

It is obvious that having Social Security privatized would have pretty much eliminated it when the markets crashed and that is what the GOP want: to get rid of Social Security.

BASTITCHES!!!!!

Daddy's pals always came to the rescue. There was no way he could possibly run the US into the ground. My God, he not only ran the US into the ground, HE RAN THE WHOLE WORLD INTO THE GROUND.

Who the heck do you call when you just screwed the world up.

Daddy doesn't have enough friends to pull it out. Oh yeah, W will be OK, but look at the rest of the WHOLE FRICKING WORLD!!!!

6. I don't think they want to get rid of social security altogether
They can't stand all that money not being in the hands of wall street and the big bankers. That's what they want they want those billions and billions to be at the beck and call of wall street players.

7. His biggest mistake was in failing to give everyones retirement funds...
to unregulated and unrestrained predators whose job it is to redistribute wealth from the poor and middle class to the rich. Well, he is honest about who is real constituents are.

13. They couldn't privatize it so they'll stop funding it.
It will have to be done very cleverly though, because it is career suicide for a politician to try to dismantle the system.

I'm rolling out the tin foil here, but perhaps some large scale event would be orchestrated to demonstrate to the populace that the government must reorder its budgetary priorities.

15. and his greatest accomplishment was "keeping the country safe..." as if 9/11 never happened?
he was warned and he ignored it and 9/11 happened and 3000 americans died.

but republicans always ignore his colossal failure on that day, and trumpet the fact that it didn't happen AGAIN, as if that were a reasonable, objective standard that they would equally apply to others. why, just look at how thrilled republicans are with obama for keeping us safe.

yeah, right.

Hell, in 100 years textbooks will probably say that Bill Clinton and Barack piloted the planes into the twin towers.

20. Of course. The SS fight was the most important of that presidency.
Just as his first term was dedicated to remaking America's foreign policy, he intended the second to restructure our society. Conservative thinkers were crowing over the imminent destruction of the welfare state and creation of the "ownership society." SS was to be replaced with stock portfolios, Medicare with HSAs, public schools with private via vouchers, et cetera. It's a very good thing that he fucked up his opportunity.

24. Would privitation have saved Wall Street until after the DEMs took over?
Edited on Fri Oct-22-10 02:54 PM by silverlib
That's why I think he regrets it. By pumping all SS funds into the system, it would have bought some time and the crash would have happened on Obama's watch.

Plus, I think the Republican agenda is to get SS and education off the plate of the Federal government and that their basis is that neither is guaranteed by the Constituion.

Well, that's just my opinion, and worth exactly what I was paid to give it.
