Lucky #13! Stockbridge (MA)

Passes Bush-Cheney Impeachment Resolution with Notice to the MA State Legislature
Submitted by Chip on Tue, 2007-05-22 05:26. Activism | Impeachment
A beaming Bob Feuer proudly announced that "the patriotic town of Stockbridge passed its resolve to impeach Bush and Cheney by a hand counted vote of 110 - 34. That is a 76% yes vote! We are now thirteen open meeting towns of Western Massachusetts so resolved by greater than a 2/3 majority."

The Article was amended to include notice by the town clerk to the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives.

Stockbridge, first settled in 1734, is in the heart of the Berkshires, and was home to Norman Rockwell, who set many of his famous paintings there. Stockbridge's proud heritage includes the Red Lion Inn, one of the few remaining inns in continuous usage since the 18th century.

Massachusetts is one of the United States' original 13 colonies

Widening Chasm Between Democratic Leaders and Voters on Impeachment

A Widening Chasm Between House Democrats and the Voters on Impeachment

By Dave Lindorff

The divide between Democratic leaders contemplating their re-election prospects in 2008 and rank-and-file Democrats is becoming a chasm--one so wide that Congressional Democrats may soon find it hard to straddle it.

The issue is impeachment.

So far, Democrats in Congress and at the top of the party hierarchy, out of touch with public sentiment and worried that impeachment could hurt them with "independents"--whom they mistakenly consider to stand somehow "in between" Democrats and Republicans--have been following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's vow that for the 110th Congress, "impeachment is off the table." They've been doing more than that: they have been actively working to tamp down, and even to crush, impeachment campaigns in the states. For example, in the state of Washington, an effort to get the state to pass a joint legislative resolution which would have compelled the Congress to initiate impeachment proceedings was derailed after the Democratic leadership dispatched two of the state's leading federal elected officials, Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Jay Inslee, to press legislative leaders to block a floor vote. Similar pressure doomed efforts that might have passed in the legislatures of New Mexico and Vermont (The Vermont Senate did pass the resolution).

Meanwhile, down at the state and local level, Democratic Party committee after Democratic Party committee is voting out resolutions calling for impeachment. The latest Democratic Party organization to call for impeachment of both Bush and Cheney is the Massachusetts Democratic Party, which at its state convention on Saturday, May 19, voted out a strong measure calling on the state’s elected representatives in Washington to investigate Bush and Cheney for misleading the nation into war, for authorizing torture, and for warrantless wiretapping. The message concludes: "If the investigation supports the charges, vote to impeach both Bush and Cheney as provided in the Constitution."

Massachusetts Democrats thus join California's huge Democratic Party, which passed a similar resolution less than a month ago at its annual convention, in what was widely perceived as a slap at Pelosi, who represents a district in San Francisco. ..more..

Waltham (MA) Democratic Central Committee Unanimously Passed Bush-Cheney Impeachment Resolution

Submitted by Chip on Mon, 2007-05-21 14:44. Activism | Impeachment
Alan Muir reports that the Waltham (MA) Democratic Central Committee unanimously passed the following impeachment resolution of Bush and Cheney on May 10, 2007.

RESOLUTION ON THE IMPEACHMENT OF GEORGE W. BUSH AND RICHARD CHENEY

WHEREAS, Jefferson's Manual section LIII, 603, states that impeachment may be set in motion by charges transmitted from the legislature of a State; and

WHEREAS, George W. Bush has intentionally misled the Congress and the public regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war against Iraq, in violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 1001 and
intentionally conspired with others to defraud the United States in connection with the war against Iraq in violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 371; and

WHEREAS, George W. Bush has admitted to ordering the National Security Agency to conduct electronic surveillance of American civilians without seeking warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review, duly constituted by Congress in 1978, in violation of Title 50 United States Code, Section 1805; and

WHEREAS, George W. Bush has conspired to commit the torture of prisoners in violation of the UN Torture Convention and the Geneva Convention, which under Article VI of the Constitution are part of the "supreme Law of the Land"; and

WHEREAS, George W. Bush has acted to strip Americans of their constitutional rights by ordering indefinite detention of citizens, without access to legal counsel, without charge and without opportunity to
appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention, based solely on the discretionary designation by the President of a U.S. citizen as an "enemy combatant", all in subversion of law; and

WHEREAS, George W. Bush has acted to subvert the Constitution of the United States and the checks and balances prescribed therein by appending signing statements to Acts of Congress legally enacted, proclaiming himself to be the sole arbiter of how and when these laws are to be executed; and

WHEREAS, Richard Cheney continued to receive remuneration from Halliburton while serving as Vice President, while Halliburton was awarded multi billion dollar contracts for the rebuilding of Iraq and for providing services to American forces serving in Iraq, contracts awarded outside the usual competitive bidding process, in a clear conflict of interest; and

WHEREAS, In all of this George W. Bush and Richard Cheney have acted in a manner contrary to their trust as President and Vice President, subversive of constitutional government to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice, and to the manifest injury of the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and of the United States.

BE IT RESOLVED that George W. Bush and Richard Cheney, by such conduct, warrant impeachment and trial, and removal from office and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States;

BE IT RESOLVED further that the Waltham Democratic City Committee requests that the Massachusetts Legislature submit these charges to the U.S. House of Representatives under Jefferson's Manual section LIII, 603 as grounds for impeachment.

Supporters of impeachment stay the course presses case
Time is running out for a Maine group seeking federal and state support for action to impeach Bush and Cheney.

By JOSIE HUANG, Portland Press Herald

In the genteel quarters of the Woodfords Club in Portland, where scenes of a quaint fishing village adorn the wallpaper, a grass-roots effort to impeach President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney was picking up steam.

"The real work begins today, and it has to hit absolute high gear in the next 40 days," Gary Higgenbottom told nearly 200 people Saturday.

Higgenbottom is a founding member of maineimpeach.org, a five-month-old statewide organization also known as Maine Campaign to Impeach. Led by anti-war activists and the Maine Lawyers for Democracy, the group has been holding town hall-style meetings and circulating a petition calling on the state's legislators and congressmen to act on impeachment.

With the state legislative session expected to wind to a close in the next month, the group plans to present the petition's 11,000-plus signatures to State House leaders on May 29. They urged people at Saturday's meeting to contact their legislators in anticipation of that event, and to turn out by the hundreds.

"I guess we recognize that this is probably going to go nowhere in this state if we don't make it happen in the Legislature soon," said Dud Hendrick, another founding member of maineimpeach.org. "I'm fearful and recognize that with every passing day, they are going to be less likely to do anything."

Pessimism mingles freely with idealism in Maine's impeachment movement. Activists acknowledge that others may find their efforts quixotic, what with 20 months left in the Bush administration and the fact that U.S. House leaders have said impeachment is off the table.

3. I am SOOOO embarrassed that Senators Murry and Inslee...
...blocked the people of the state of Washington on this issue down in Olympia. I wrote them about my deep disappointment and embarrassment over this. If a viable candidate challenges either of these two who is in favor of accountability they will have my full support, at this point I do not care if it is a repug! This issue outweighs partisanship! Dem candidates heed my words here:
:patriot: LISTEN TO WE THE PEOPLE DAMNIT! :patriot:

(btw, I have NEVER voted for a republican. I have voted for an Independent once I think, a guy named Anderson who ran for President years ago...not even sure if he WAS an independent anymore it has been so long ago...he ran against reagan and advocated a 50 cent gas tax)

8. A serious primary challenger for Rep. Inslee.
Unfortunately Sen. Murray won't be facing the voters in 2008, but if Rep. Inslee won't impeach to fulfill his oath to "support and defend," perhaps he will to save his political future. Threatening to mount a primary challenge is more effective than threatening to abandon the Party. Perhaps a call to one of the people behind the resolution effort to suggest the notion?

WRT Sen. Murray, if Jason Park is still her judiciary legislative assistant, he'd be the guy to call. It's usually not too difficult to prompt staffers to blather their bogus excuses. Once spoken, all their excuses are http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=337814">easy to contradict.

11. Mohave County Minutemen press release calls for "the impeachment
Edited on Tue May-22-07 09:37 AM by pat_k
. . .of President Bush and Vice President Cheney and the removal of their cabinet “for engaging in a conspiracy with Congress to undermine the wishes and will of the American people ... which has placed this nation and its people in grave mortal danger."

Reactionary Republicans don't hesitate when it comes to accusing and demanding action. Their demands don't appear to be followed by a chorus of fearful predictions that "bad things" will happen if Repubs impeach for policy.

There is a reason that the public perceives Republicans as strong and the Democrats as weak.

13. We need to get out and make this an issue with our friends everywhere!

and here's a sign campaign we could get Turks to yell something that would sound like "Impeach! Impeach! Impeach!" to us!

"Im piç" is Turkish for "Bastard Sign" which I think also echoes our sentiments here too!
