Let's all STOP subsidizing the Deadbeat Rich after January 1st!!!
Edited on Fri Oct-22-10 04:20 PM by AnArmyVeteran
Why don't democratic leaders say this about Bush's tax cuts for the rich?

I've heard over and over again that if the Bush tax cuts are made permanent it will add $700 billion to our deficit. But they never say by allowing the top 2% to keep that money that the debt will be put on our shoulders. So by continuing to give the wealthiest people huge tax cuts it will result in all the rest of us having to pay for it. Why is it so hard for democratic leaders to just say the middle class and the poor will be billed for that $700 billion?

When Reaganomics passed in the 1980s it resulted in the biggest transfer of wealth from the poorest in the country to the richest. I remember soon after trickle-down economics took effect. All across the country states were faced with huge budget shortfalls caused by federal funds drying up because the money was going to the richest 5% of the population.

Because of the shortfalls, states from coast to coast began raising state and local taxes. User fees were either initiated or greatly increased for all state, county and city services. Entrance fees to state parks were started or increased. Fishing, hunting and car registrations were all greatly increased. I remember my Dad complaining because his car registration went from $15 a year to a whopping $60. Since he was on a fixed income it really hurt him financially. While a $45 increase doesn't sound like a lot of money, it is to someone on a fixed income. My Dad had to do without something to subsidize the huge tax cuts for the wealthiest people in the country. Forty-five dollars isn't anything to a millionaire but it means doing without food, air conditioning or other necessities for the middle class or the poor.

I dont understand why democrats in office aren't phrasing the debate in this way. If the rich aren't paying their fair share the rest of us will have to pay a lot more. I don't know about you but I'm tired of subsidizing the deadbeat rich. And I'm tired of the constant republican attacks against the most vulnerable people in the country.

When will democratic leaders begin to speak out? The day AFTER the election???

1. I was 40 in 1981.
I remember St. Ronnie explaining how his "trickedus-down" economics was going to make us all rich. It was just that us poor folks would have to wait a few years, but have-no-fear, the wealth would surely soon trickle down to us.
Well Ronald, I've been waiting . 30 years in fact.

2. the stock market did real well in the 80's, what happened to your capital gains?
that's the republicans thinking. they don't understand that most people either have no stocks or their earnings from investments are a small supplement to their earnings from labor. you have to be REALLY well off before your money earns more than you do.

but to them, it already trickled down to the rest of us, via a rising stock market and good jobs with increasing incomes. nevermind that inflation and union-busting and offshoring has kept wages down and jobs have never been a priority for republicans.

and I remember the warnings about how this will balloon the debt and be unsustainable.

Well here it is almost 30 years later and the debt has ballooned to an unsustainable level.

7. The national debt exploded almost 400% under Reagan, but he's considered 'fiscally conservative' :)
And Reagan never once proposed a balanced budget or vetoed an appropriations bill. And Reagan also grew the size of government to record levels. But ignorant conservatives worship him as the god of fiscal responsibility. Btw, in Reagan's second year unemployment was almost 11% and it wasn't caused by his predecessor. It was caused by Reagan's trickle down economic scheme which led to the mass firings of workers.

8. They even use the Reagan debt against Obama...
Heard a right-winger on the radio saying how it took from 1776 (or so) up to 1990 for the US to create $4 Trillion in debt, and that Obama's created $4 Trillion in debt during the last two years! Of course, I'm sure the VAST majority of that first $4 trillion in debt was created from say, oh, January 1981 through 1990 -- Reagan and part 1 of Bush's term.

There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics.

4. There were so many opportunities for the Democrats
to lock in this election. I mean I have yet to see a single ad mentioning the Republican vote on health care financing for 9/11 first responders. The vote was one of the most disgusting things I have ever witnessed in politics. Voting against health care for 9/11 first responders because they didn't want to pay for it by closing a tax loophole that allows Foreign Corporations to do business in the US without paying taxes? I mean come on, even the Tea Baggers would have to think twice about this one. Yet not a single ad, not a single mention. Yeah... good plan.
