Hey there, am I missing something? Aren't we in charge? So....
Where's the bill to let Medicare negotiate for lower drug prices?

Where's the bill to get us all lower medical and drug prices?

Where's the bill to get rid of the lousy bankruptcy act?

Where's the bill to stop the banks from charging 28% interest when ever they feel like it?

Or the bill to get the damn Mercury out of the rivers & the new "eco friendly" light bulbs?

How about that bill to restore the right of habeas corpus (you know, not getting arrested & beaten at a whim)?

Oh yeah, and HOW ABOUT THE F'ING BILL TO GET US OUT OF IRAQ NOW, by demand of the American people?

May be I missed something. I thought we were in charge. :shrug:

24. We would be in control
if we the people would come together on common issues and not be so divisive of party rather than constitutionality. We have been totally ignored by those that suppose to represent us as a nation. These high gas prices are so ridiculous that we shouldn't have to come to DU to complain about it, our congressmen and women should have long since these prices got out of control shopuld have been in there fighting for lower prices and investigations.

77. Well said!
Our reps should be in the community, pounding the beat for justice.

This is a total rip off and nobody will allow any action. I understand that the US Attorneys, a few of them, wanted to nail th oil companies. How bad must that have been for them to go out on a limb.

Amazing.

Critical point. DU should be a higher level place because the basics like gas, jobs etc. are addressed by our representatives. But they're not. Very irritating.

3. you were wrong
without a veto proof majority in the senate and house most of those items have no chance of passing. Bush would veto, the Republican Minority would stall them in commitee, run procedural hurdles on the floor. It's why we need to win the presidency in 2008. Then we dont' need a veto proof majority.

15. We agree in the vital task - PRESIDENT...but we can get 'em out and pass 'em.
The bills are not captive to the Republican minority in the House. We run the place. The Senate is different but my point is, I don't think there's a majority for many of these on either side of the aisle. Take the bankruptcy bill, please, just shred it, and the banking legislation for legalized usury. Those would get 40% of both bodies.

Iraq should be simple in the House by the numbers 60-65% favor a deadline, cut the funds.

What happened to "the people's House?"

Time for public funding of campaigns so citizens own both chambers.

5. We're In Charge??? Where????
I still see a lawless turdball at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue who had been vetoing any sensible legislation.

All those bills you've asked about have already been voted on and passed in the House where the Democrats do have a majority...not a super majority to override a veto, but a lot better than what we did have and allows those bills and many other at least to come to the floor and forces Repugnicans to either vote for their constituents or their party puppetmasters.

The Senate is another animal...there is barely a majority for most issues and without 60 votes, the GOOP promises to fillibuster and obstruct any legislation passed by the House...as well as being able to uphold a booooshie veto. Democrats need to take 55 or more seats next year to break this gridlock.

And, how can one forget the "Unitary Executive" that has been operating out of control and the Constitution from the moment they stole the election. They sign executive statements or ignore enforcing what Congress passes (and they did that with their own Repugnican majorities) and feel they are beyond reproach.

The Democrats are FAR from in control. It's more an indication of how far out of control we were that frustrates many. Few here thought the Democrats would retake the House, yet control the Senate a year ago...since the party had dug itself into near irrelevance. Now we're just starting to get back on our feet and people here are expecting these people to jump hoops and reverse 6 years of totalitarianism and 12 yaers of House & Senate corruption in a few weeks.

Wanna be really in charge? Get down to a local Democratic campaign...House & Senate races are shaping up now...this is a great time to learn about the candidates and find and support the most Progressive and Liberal ones so we can bring a new, fresh class of Democrats who share our values and goals and make all of what seek and more a reality.

17. Been at that campaign thing...
...got me a Gov who won't step up to very mild gun control in light of the nation's biggest massacre and ex felons, 200,000 of them who can't vote from old Confederate legislation ("Jim Crow" today). My Senator is great and Congressperson, when he's not offending people, is a very good Democrat. I endorse working in campaigns as much as you can, giving too. I'd work for the gov. again just to stop the Robertson/Regent University candidates on the right.

But people in Congress don't get it...pass the damn Iraq bill, a good one.

btw, Which bills have passed in the House that I mentioned. The Senate is difficult, in fact, it's about 60-40 against all of that based on previous voting, and that's optimistic. But the House can pass them all and let * veto them.

18. The Senate Is The Chessboard Here
Kudos on your work and I'm sure you know the importance to keep our eyes on the "lower ticket" races so future Congresses will move our agenda without a lot of the kabuki theater that current exists. I've already written checks to several campaigns with more coming up soon.

I've long advocated that we continue to bring up bills and votes that force moderate Repugnicans to pick between their love of boooosh and their own self interests and the fear of losing next year. In many ways, this is reversing what occured in '02 where boooosh pushed the IWR on the Democrats on the eve of the mid-terms that is still smelling to this very day (and, yes, we should repeal that puppy pronto!)

Prune Face McConnell will try to stall and filibuster...and ya know somethin'...I was against the whole nuclear option thing when it was in Frist's hands, but I sure wouldn't mind seeing Harry Reid play the same card. I think if we continue to press Repugnicans to constantly support this regime and invasion the more pressure is put on them and 52 votes can move to 60 and beyond. Even McConnell is dancing on a pin on the Iraq mess...the closer we get to elections, the smaller that head gets.

Cheers...

How about this...Gore declares his candidacy (after he gets the Nobel Prize) on the steps of the Florida Supreme Court building in Tallahassee, says he's going to win Florida and take all those votes to the convention. Instant credibility as the people's candidate, set's Florida straight (he won easily w/ a fair election) and he break the "stiff" mold. I can dream can't I. I expect Dean will fully implement the nationwide strategy and we'll run the table. Hope he sticks around.

Cheers to you too, happy campaigning. After all, we're the party of the "Happy Warrior."

The Repugs (even in their most weakened state) always come out fighting and repeat their lies over and over making them appear BIGGER THAN THEY ARE! They are like "Blowfish" those tiny fish who PUFF UP to Enormous Size with prickles intimidating their foes.

I think we hoped our Dems could be like Blowfish, Hedgehogs, Porcupines and Turkeys who DISPLAY ENORMOUS STRENGTH even though they are all very ordinary in their daily lives.

Peace! Didn't want to argue with you...but I'm really upset with Reid's COMMENTS! He could have "Done BETTER" than this HUMILIATING RESPONSE!

88. I Posted Before Reid Spoke
And I'm probably as upset and disapointed in what's happened as anyone, but call me the cynic.

I could see the surprise on many last November after the election...many here looked stunned with the look of "what now". Waxman said it best at the time...it wasn't what to do, it was where to start. It's been tricky footing ever since...from the Pelosi/Murtha/Hoyer fiasco to Nancy's Plane and so on...even though Democrats have strengths in numbers, they still haven't developed the huevos grandes than 12 years of Repugnican hubris.

Remember, we had to drag most of the Democratic establishement to victory last year, and the job's not finished. A year ago, Feingold's ammendement couldn't even get a sponsor, this year he got 29 votes. Progress is measured in small steps here and still played in the shadows of a party that still hasn't figured out its the majority yet. I suspect it will take another election for that to happen.

Don't count Reid out here...maybe best said...better to fight another day on the ground of your chosing. Remember, there's gonna be a lot more funding votes...and I suspect we'll see a resolution introduced to revoke the IWR...and that's where we really need to be strong. We know the "situation on the ground" will only get worse and put even more pressure on nervous Repugnicans to start cracking. Call it the first test...but not the last.

Patience. I know....I know...but we will prevail.

:hug:

31. Actually that worked in the Republic of Venice for about 600 years, real well
Why? Because everybody did extremely well, from guild members to merchants to rulers.

The leader(the Doge) signed a huge contract that outlined every imagined form of corruption
and nepotism. He read it first too;) And if he did one thing out of line, that was his
end point. No relatives, no inherited authority (starting at about 1050).

Lets get a real Contract for America, make all elected officials sign it - and see what
happens.

You are correct about us being correct, it's such a simple conclusion;)

10. And where is the Democratic support for the investigations?
Waxman, Conyers and Leahy seem to be out there on their own with their committees.

The rest of the Dems are sitting in fine restaurants or flying around the country in private jets with the lobbyists footing the tab. About a dozen Dems are working for the people and the rest are trolling for cash.

Until the Democratic party gets behind these investigations and start speaking loudly with one voice, corruption will continue to flourish.

Articles of Impeachment Adopted by the Committee on the Judiciary
July 27, 1974

* Article 1
* Article 2
* Article 3
* Analysis of the Judiciary Committee Votes

Article 1
RESOLVED, That Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanours, and that the following articles of impeachment to be exhibited to the Senate:

ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT EXHIBITED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN THE NAME OF ITSELF AND OF ALL OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AGAINST RICHARD M. NIXON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT OF ITS IMPEACHMENT AGAINST HIM FOR HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANOURS.

ARTICLE 1

In his conduct of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his consitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has prevented, obstructed, and impeded the administration of justice, in that:

On June 17, 1972, and prior thereto, agents of the Committee for the Re-election of the President committed unlawful entry of the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, District of Columbia, for the purpose of securing political intelligence. Subsequent thereto, Richard M. Nixon, using the powers of his high office, engaged personally and through his close subordinates and agents, in a course of conduct or plan designed to delay, impede, and obstruct the investigation of such illegal entry; to cover up, conceal and protect those responsible; and to conceal the existence and scope of other unlawful covert activities.

The means used to implement this course of conduct or plan included one or more of the following:

1. making false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States;

2. withholding relevant and material evidence or information from lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States;

3. approving, condoning, acquiescing in, and counselling witnesses with respect to the giving of false or misleading statements to lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States and false or misleading testimony in duly instituted judicial and congressional proceedings;

4. interfering or endeavouring to interfere with the conduct of investigations by the Department of Justice of the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force, and Congressional Committees;

5. approving, condoning, and acquiescing in, the surreptitious payment of substantial sums of money for the purpose of obtaining the silence or influencing the testimony of witnesses, potential witnesses or individuals who participated in such unlawful entry and other illegal activities;

6. endeavouring to misuse the Central Intelligence Agency, an agency of the United States;

7. disseminating information received from officers of the Department of Justice of the United States to subjects of investigations conducted by lawfully authorized investigative officers and employees of the United States, for the purpose of aiding and assisting such subjects in their attempts to avoid criminal liability;

8. making or causing to be made false or misleading public statements for the purpose of deceiving the people of the United States into believing that a thorough and complete investigation had been conducted with respect to allegations of misconduct on the part of personnel of the executive branch of the United States and personnel of the Committee for the Re-election of the President, and that there was no involvement of such personnel in such misconduct: or

9. endeavouring to cause prospective defendants, and individuals duly tried and convicted, to expect favoured treatment and consideration in return for their silence or false testimony, or rewarding individuals for their silence or false testimony.

In all of this, Richard M. Nixon has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

Wherefore Richard M. Nixon, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

Damn! But that's the "out of control" part. This is exactly why 40% of people stay away from the polls. I'm convinced. When they think somebody will tell it straight, e.g. Ventura (and they were sort of right, maybe a wee bit), they turn out.

Honesty as a vote getting tactic...that's what we need to get across.

There may have been resolutions or statements regarding any of these, but there hasn't been that much serious action, to my knowledge. I do like that they passed a bill changing student loan interest rates.

Not only haven't there been many impactful bills passed, but I don't see how they have changed WH behavior in the least. No policy changes, no change in tone, no compromise.

The people who voted for the rethuglicans wanted abortion and gay marriages stopped. Thank goodness that hasn't happened so far. I really don't believe the majority of Americans would want that to happen. But that is why so many fundies voted for them. Those were the carrots that were held in front of them to sway them to vote rethuglican.

People got sick and tired of the bushit that is going on and now the Dems are the majority. We thought it would bring change. A chance to stop the madness. I guess hope was the carrot that was dangling in front of us. But nothing changes. I am becoming extremely disillusioned with the way this country operates.

Democrats hold a comfortable majority margin of 233-202 over Republicans in the House, which will allow Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer plenty of leeway to push legislation supporting Democratic priorities for 2007-08.

Since all bills related to taxation, appropriations and the federal budget originate in the House, President Bush seems a tad nervous... and prematurely combative... over the prospect of presenting his fiscal 2008 budget to the House next month.

snip

The powerful House Committee Chairs have all been assigned, and they're guaranteed to pack a painful wallop to the Bush agenda. Conyers at Judicial, Dingell at Energy and Commerce, Rangel at Ways & Means, Rahall at Natural Resources, Skelton at Armed Forces... yikes! It's enough to make any any Bushie wince.

50. Basic Math - 233/435 = 53%
slim majority, and not enough to really push or force anything. Espeically as radical as the things you want. They may not seem radical to us, but we are far on the liberal end.

Add to that the fact that all we really need is 15 or so Dems to not vote with the party, and we can't pass anything. And since many Dems in the House are from conservative or moderate areas, and have voted with Repigs in the past, we will have trouble pushing things like this through.

Of course, then consider that things are even tighter in the Senate, with pretty much a dead even split depending on how some votes swing.

Finally, of course, nothing we pass is veto-proof, as Bush has already proven.

73. Democrats 233 - Republicans 202 - Percent doesn't matter so much here.

That's a 31 vote margin. Very workable. When we're the minority, there's a partial excuse but none if we're not fighting. When we have 31 votes, we can do a lot. It's called Party discipline.

31 seats and we g3t bubkus!

we will have been so overloaded with cross-firing bullshit from not just the Republicans at the Democrats....but Democrats at each other.. that nobody will even notice the "auction" of the White House.

the election will never again be about who SHOULD be president, it will forever be changed to who can present 51% of the country support.

The only difference between Democrats and Republican politicians is the jar of vasoline,.........the public gets ass-f***ed either way.

I like the way you think. However the most disgusting aspect of her (Cindy Sheehan).... is the whoring out of the loss of her son, for a F&%*(#&%ING quick fifteen minutes of fame with people that have forsaken any rational thought. The pictures and stories of "protests" like this, the constant "liar" comments about my president, and the general lack of respect given to the United States by the Democratic/Liberal wing is a perfect example of the direction the Left has taken.
A child always hates it's parents until it understands what truly is best... and matures into a functional member of society. Then they apologize to his/her parents for the crap they dealt out.... and go on to raise a new generation of AMERICANS based on the morals and principals instilled in them by their parents.
It's easy to see what type of upbringing and moral background was instilled in the democratic party of today. Slackers, careers in welfare, Jane Fonda's stab in the back, treasonist BITCH! Once the DU membership turns 40 and moves out of their parents house, the real world will hand them a jar of Vaseline, before their education.

63. Democrats can engage in democratic dialog with a positive outcome.
This is a pro Democratic thread, build a fire, we need some action. The world is literally burning up, not to mention the particular outrages we're experiencing in this country.

The Democrat I worked the hardest for, delivered the most for was a Democrat who is way to moderate for my taste. He is also a decent individual who was VASTLY PREFERABLE to the extremely right wing Republican. I'd do it again tomorrow if the need arose.

At the same time, I feel no need to be quiescent about my views and insistence that Democrats look like Democrats, at least as I grew up knowing them.

Aside from the lousy election system, which cheats us, we've got corporate money embedded into the system so deeply it hurts to watch. We need public funding NOW, no half measures, no more fooling around. And we need these politicians, the ones we are presumed to have elected, all of them, to sign a serious contract specifying potential conflicts of interest and pledging, with their signature, not to engage in it.

In WWII, the troops were known to gripe about this and that openly, even in their papers. Nobody questioned their commitment to the cause and they certainly didn't hesitate to put it on the line. This is the same type of situation, although the experience is not even remotely as dangerous and stressful. All the more reason to speak up and accept our responsibilities for pushing the party in a coherent direction, one with a Kennedy like vision and a Johnson like execution (save the war).

I like Gore's vision, it's vital, and I like Dean's concept of contesting every election. That's just what the nation needs and what it will go for in a big way if we get it out there.

The benefit we got was negative. No Patriot Act III, etc. So I'm thinking it's OK - they were elected to put a stop to the Decider's apparent desire to control everything, but the people know the system is as it is. Get a Dem president in 2008 before blaming Congress, they too are only 1/3 of the power and unlike the Decider have not claimed to be more.

* and Cheney deserve impeachment but maybe they're thinking that's too much with everything else going on?

What would the reaction be if * and Cheney were both impeached? In the country as a whole?

"Linda" is a reference to Fahrenheit 451, and when the man in her wall-screen turned toward her and pretended to ask her what she thought. The media's concern for our opinion. Remember, I've got a headache.

Khachaturian's Sabre Dance? Land of 1,000 Dances? The Tennessee Waltz? (for Gore). I dunno, something with "dance" in the title.

No, the hoody-Eminem thing is good. Angry, impatient and ominous.

Dancing is still very nice, however.

85. I understand that.
But lordy, lets pass some serious bills in the House, lets pound them with very clear, readible, unamended (no pork) bills that every man and woman in the country can read.

US House of Representatives:

Therefore be it resolved that

(i) no bank or other financial institution charge more than 12% interest for any credit card or similar instrument to any citizen of the United States of America;

(ii)no bank or other financial institution shall charge late penalties more than $x.00, and

(iii) those convicted of either of these acts will be subject to penalties no less than five years nor more than 10 in a Federal Penitentiary.

Hows that. I don't know the interest cap, but 29% ain't it. Let the Senate vote that down, sit on it, ignore it.

Simple, for the public benefit, and ethical. This would be hugely popular.

We could send these over and form a very small pile, unlike the crap they do now.

Why not?
