By the time the Soviets pushed the Germans out of Russia and Eastern Europe, the Brits would already be learning to count in german.

You can't forget that the other side was engaged in a team effort too. The U.S. was fighting the Germans, Italians and the Japanese. In the case of the Japanese, we were fighting alone, with assistance and support from the Australians. The Europeans were blown out of Asia early in the war and the Soviets were fully engaged with the Germans.

As someone who's been to Europe many times, I have to say this view of us is shared quite widely, and not without some justification.
