I wouldn't agree the USA has "achieved nothing." But we are a miserable spectacle nowadays, vapid and excitable, as we burn the seed corn and furniture to keep the pretense of our "good life" rolling.

14. The British empire was the most succesful one in the history of our species.
The people from this small island conquered half of the world's land and ruled over a good chunk of its population. No one can deny that they made the best of their time in the spot light; the industrial revolution is their greatest achievement but not the only one by far. They have nothing to be envious of.

15. "Success" for them; for the peoples they colonized, I dare say it was anything but "success"
The story of European imperialism is a sorry chronicle of extirpation, wholesale slaughter, theft and crimes on a scale unmatched in history till Hitler arrived on the scene. It was a 'success' in the way a cold-blooded murder where the killer gets away is a success.

Did I mention that the rise of the British empire was accompanied by quite unbearable conditions at "home" for the working class during the Industrial Revolution?

I have nothing but contempt for apologists for empire and those who whitewash history.

What they might be envious of is the ability of a younger nation to replace them as a super power after having to "thank them" for pulling their asses from the fire of the Third Reich.

And what exactly is a DUer doing extolling the value of "empire"?.

wane. There's nothing noteworthy about the fact that the British empire went into decline and eventual dissolution. The United States too will one die fade into irrelevance; it's just how it works.

Not extolling or deviling, simply providing a contrast to all your self-righteous, chauvinist whining.

You practically DROOLED over Britain, dismissing its failures and cruelties and saying it had "nothing" to be envious of.

Whether that makes you a "chauvinist" or just an extreme Anglophile I don't know, and it doesn't matter.

By the way, you never answered my question: If Britain's decline is "not noteworty"..Why is America's?

I would also take exception to the statement "I critize your country"...You ooze contempt for it and you couldn't evince more bias if you were being paid.

97. Interesting....I find it doesn't get "popular"
until Americans have been subjected to an exhaustive load of gratuitous anti-American shit...and it's a "meme" of neither right nor left..It's just a fact...One I've even heard honest, self-secure Britons admit.

A little history:

The "team effort" with the Soviets helped beat Hitler but did virtually NOTHING to beat the other fascists in Italy. The western armies of Germany and the Italian forces would have been too much for the British to handle by themselves...Churchhill was begging for our help. By the time the Soviets pushed the Germans out of Russia and Eastern Europe, the Brits would already be learning to count in german.

You can't forget that the other side was engaged in a team effort too. The U.S. was fighting the Germans, Italians and the Japanese. In the case of the Japanese, we were fighting alone, with assistance and support from the Australians. The Europeans were blown out of Asia early in the war and the Soviets were fully engaged with the Germans.

137. Not to mention that it took the US and the Russians
almost 2 years to get a player in the game. The Brits literally singlehandedly held off Hitler at great cost to their country, infrastructure, etc.

Ill give the US it's due, but it's pretty easy to win the game when you come in fresh in the 4th period and replace the team that has held the score pretty close to even.

Snort. OK - rant off.

The slave trade, slavery, and ore from Africa...like most of the colonial powers. I daresay without slavery, Western civilization would not have risen as swiftly as it did. This is the problem with romanticising history...it glorifies human injustices.

Edited on Sat Oct-23-10 06:09 PM by Confusious
Um, not really.

Slavery was a legal institution in all of the 13 American colonies, and the profits of the slave trade and of West Indian plantations amounted to 5% of the British economy at the time of the Industrial Revolution

In 1807, following many years of lobbying by the Abolitionist movement, the British Parliament voted to make the slave trade illegal anywhere in the Empire with the Slave Trade Act 1807. Thereafter Britain took a prominent role in combating the trade, and slavery itself was abolished in the British Empire with the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_slavery#Great_Britain_and_Ireland

Most came from trade from it's colonies, which it had the exclusive right to trade with.

7. America is a lot more nuanced than this gives us credit for.
Edited on Sat Oct-23-10 12:20 AM by leveymg
If you drive 60 miles from any major American city, the United States is just a large backward third-world resource-extracting country filled with droves of oil derrick workers, Fundamentalist Ministers, sluts, farmers, and truck drivers. Everywhere, truck drivers. In the midst of that vast, mindless miasma are islands of learning, culture and accomplishment - people who write great books and music - but those Volvo-driving intellectuals live in self-imposed isolation and self-referential splendor.

"Five Easy Pieces" is perhaps Jack Nicholson's finest film. It captures that America. You have to shrink away from that America, and sometimes it seems the only sane response is to flee, hitch hike into the frozen wilderness without a coat. But, the truck driver will offer you a ride, and a jacket if you're shivering and miserable. "It's cold as hell where we're headed." And, that redeems the place for me. Jack should've accepted kindness when it was offered. But, like the writer of the e-mail missive above, he prefers to just be cold and miserable. That's a choice.

Unlike the sixties for instance when they were still recovering from WWII, even with the Marshall Plan.

http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/marshall/

During that time the U.S. had the largest middle class in the world and the hightest number of college graduates.

We "could" provide health care for our citizens..It's all about the political will.

You might also consider that those "secure social safety nets" are easier to acquire when you're not paying for the bulk of shared defense, like Nato, for instance.

They are many things but they include a very large collection of script kiddies, net anarchists, black hats, white hats and DDS drones. To put it more succinctly they can shut down sites very quickly.

In general they are in favour of a completely open and unrestricted internet and have a particular dislike of RIAA and similar organisations. They have shut down the RIAA site in the past and will advise you on peer to peer networks and downloading without attracting RIAA's attention.

The fact that they were documented asshats for much of their history does not in any way obviate the fact that we have behaved badly as well and have betrayed many of our ideals. We no longer hold the moral high ground.

Unless you are also saying that torture, unilateral war, creationism, etc. are all admirable traits, in which case your arguments are at least self consistant. You aren't, are you?

Edited on Sat Oct-23-10 01:02 PM by whathehell
who have their own problems, many mirroring or even surpassing ours, because you've likely NOT had enough exposure to them...Not that lack of exposure is much of a problem here insofar as the vast majority of Euros, for instance, have little to NO direct exposure to the States either..A little known fact is that more Americans have visited Europe than Europeans have visited America.

They basically know what they see on TV and what their super power envy needs them to believe..It's a "leveler" for them of the power differntial...It's pretty obvious, really.

Malaise, after her back was against the wall, so to speak, finally "admitted" that Jamaica has problems too..but she doesn't specify them, of course, because she'd rather come on here and bitch about America...Again, she's probably never even been here.

After all the US-bashing, admitting that her OWN country had problems was quite a concession for her, so she tried to distinguish Jamaicans from Americans with this faux comparison: "but we admit to them"..A response was not too difficult: "We 'admit' to ours too...To what else would you attribute the existence of this board and others like it"? ...She couldn't respond.:eyes:

Is the democratic party comprised of "fundamentalist morons"?

No?

Then why the Hell do you let those who have nothing to lose, but lots to gain, define us?

Why do citizens like you, who know better, let the haters paint us with that stupid and false broad brush?

Now, I AM assuming you're American because your profile puts you in Colorado..You could, of course, be "just visiting".

98. Look, honey, you're getting all worked up over nothing.
It's some anonymous poster making observations about Americans that are not at all new. The picture of the "boorish American" has been around for at least a full generation now. As someone who's been to Europe many times, I have to say this view of us is shared quite widely, and not without some justification.

I've seen the busloads of sweatpant-wearing, sneaker-clad, fanny-packed Americans wandering around the Weihnachtsmarkt and the Hauptbahnhof, wondering loudly why the signs aren't in English, complaining that they can't buy a Budweiser. Add to that our behavior in Iraq and Afghanistan, our lead role in destroying the world's economy, and all the recent press concerning our elections - what do you think people are going to think? They're going to think we're all a bunch of crazy, selfish loons.

And in large part, they're right. We do treat the rest of the world like our footstool. We do tend to believe we are blameless for anything that happens to us. We do torture and detain without trial. We are arrogant in our dealings with others. And it doesn't take a butthurt Britfag to tell me that.

want to address, lol...You see, we weren't talking about "tourists"..We were talking about the general population of the country...You actually agreed that "we", hundreds of millions of us, it seems, have turned into "a bunch of fundamentalist morons"..Duh.

If you want to talk about tourists though, I'm afraid you're a tad out of date.. It seems we "ugly americans" have strong competition from the Euros themselves, especially the Brits who have been voted "Worst Tourists in the World" several times in the last decade.

http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=worst+tourists+in+the+world&aq=f&aqi=g1g-o1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=cac716aade6fa416

I do feel sorry for the long suffering Euros who have to put up with our declasse fashion sense -- but they seem to like our money, nonetheless. If you're old enough to remember the eighties, in fact, you might remember the "terrorist scare" in Europe that kept a lot of Americans from visiting...Margaret Thatcher, that beacon of anti-imperialism, was practically BEGGING us to come back..She actually said "We miss your warmth", Lol....We would have died laughing had it not been so pathetic and desperate.

BTW, I've not only traveled to Europe "several times" I've lived and studied there as well.

The U.K. kept Televangelist, Bennie Hinn, from coming into the country..but he had lots of appearances scheduled in the U.K...They also have "pro-lifers" although not as many.

As I've said before...When you actually LOOK at what's up in other countries you will find some very SIMILAR problems, e.g. racisim, anger at immigrants, religiosity, etc.

In comparing ourselves to the Euros, for instance, one of the "differences" is the scale of the average european country vs. the U.S. The European Union is composed of twenty seven countries and has approximately 420 million people..We, on the other hand are ONE country with 300 million...Do you see what I'm getting at?

it's much worse now...Religion DOES tend to get stronger in bad times..That doesn't negate the role of the oligarchy.

The conservative PTB have learned to "play" on it in ways they didn't in earlier decades. As the repukes have gone further to the Right, they've come to rely on "wedge" issues..Hell, they don't cost anything and they've got to act like they're "offering" something.

You may not be old enough to remember, but there was actually a time when religion played little to NO role in the Republican party...Freaking Eisenhower was at least as liberal as President Obama.

102. Polynesian wars:
The great struggle by the peoples we now refer to as Native Americans to replace by warfare the original inhabitants of the Americas.

Little known due to lack of any written materials, but evidently very violent.

A similar struggle took place in Japan, displacing the peoples we call the Ainu.

Sadly, there still exists a great deal of denial among Native Americans that this epic war took place at all.

britain was practically the only country in europe that resisted nazi invasion.

if anyone on this board had one tenth of the balls that the oldest british farmer with a shotgun had during ww2, we'd get something done in this country.

Britain "resisted" nazi occupation with a lot of "help" from -- you guessed it -- the USA.

..and before you denigrate anyone on this board as not having one tenth of "the balls" of anyone in Britain...I'd suggest you go to the Veterans Forum and tell it to them.

144. Lend Lease aside.
Which was only put in place because FDR realized the threat but couldn't get shit through congress because a large portion of upper crust yanks loved them some Nazi's, and the rest of the country was too focused on their own navels to notice shit. It wasn't until you were bombed personally that we bestired our lazy asses. And we were very lucky as well. If midway didn't tip our way and if the Russians hadn't fought on the eastern front, and if the former commonwealth countries sacrifice LOTS in order to stop the fascists while the US twiddled it's "thumbs," well.....

THe US didn't singlehandedly bail anyone out. We JOINED the fight. And we JOINED it almost 2 years too late.

Sure we helped. But it was pretty little and almost too late. Cheers for us. We're number one.

"Which was only put in place because FDR realized the threat but couldn't get shit through congress because a large portion of upper crust yanks loved them some Nazi's",

BULLSHIT...Does it occur to you that Americans at the time were getting a little SICK of having to pull the collective european ass out of their own shit?.

It was the 2nd time in the space of barely twenty years we were being asked to go and shed blood for them...Forget the "lovin' nazis" ..Ever heard of American Firsters?..No..I didn't think so.

"THe US didn't singlehandedly bail anyone out"...

What a load of shit....Who was doing the big ass hauling with the JAPANESE?...The "Stralians?..The Brits?.

And again, dear...The brits would have been blitzed into oblivion had they had to wait for the Russians..They know it..We know it...I think even YOU know it.

"And we JOINED it almost 2 years too late"....Really?....Well, Gee..We DID have that little Japanese scuffle, didn't we...So sorry we were "late"....Guess we didn't know we were on a fucking SCHEDULE...Hauling ass for successive European fuck ups can get a bit TIRED, you know?

You bet your ass it was "cheers for us"...although with your blank profile and anti-yank bigotry, I kind of doubt you've got the pronoun right.

Again..Shove it up your nose.

and disparage the balls of "anyone on this board" when you've fought for your contry, as you clearly have NOT, or at the VERY least grow the "balls" to post this on the Veterans Forum....Until then I'd suggest you re-patriate or STFU.

89. "Your cultural contribution is negligible"
Sorry, that's ignorant enough to invalidate the entirety of that silly little rant. Whether or not one LIKES American culture is irrelevant to the fact that it is without a doubt the most pervasive "culutural contribution" to global culture writ large since Rome laid the foundations for Western civilization itself. You can go ANYWHERE in the world, with the exception of the most backwater, isolated villages in remote areas and find trappings of American culture, from Coca Cola to pop music.

And as far as "taking 40 years to defeat the USSR," well, I suppose we could've done it in an instant, but I doubt "Anonymous" would be so righteous in the middle of a nuclear winter.

136. The US contribution has been science and technology. The US started the Information Age.
The US has and continues to lead in basic research. The US contribution to humanity of space exploration alone pays our dues imo. You can then add medicine and agriculture and the list goes on and on and on.

This post is pure anti-american jigoism.

The majority of people here appear to be senior citizens that don't 'get' what trolling is. They call disruptors trolls and then proceed to post in troll threads. GD gets trolled regularly by a few posters - this one just happens to an accident. Maybe.
