Fatal shark attack in Santa Barbara

http://calcoastnews.com/2010/10/fatal-shark-attack-at-vandenberg-beach/

The victim of a fatal shark attack cried out for help as a shark bit into his leg and then drug him under water, about a 100 yards from Surf Beach at Vandenberg Air Force Base, on Friday morning.

Lucas Ransom, a 19-year-old University of California, Santa Barbara student, and his friend Matthew Garcia were boogie boarding in the surf line when the shark attacked Ransom without warning.

“When the shark hit him, he just said, ‘Help me, dude!’ He knew what was going on,” Garcia told

Lucas Ransom

the AP. “It was really fast. You just saw a red wave and this water is blue — as blue as it could ever be — and it was just red, the whole wave. Even the barrel was red.”

8. Yeah, that's the answer to that particular rhetorical question.
Anyway, condolences to the poor family. How sad.

Makes me want to warn my son to stay out of the water, even though we're south and the weather is bad. That poor family.

15. How many fatal dog attacks ocuured this year? this month? even just today?
Our fear of sharks is simply the fear of "other."

21. Yes, but how many sharks
do we run into daily? And what percentage of shark attack victims live to talk about it? I think it's a little more than just the fear of "other". A stealth attack, under water, by a 20 foot shark is horrifying to imagine.

23. Dog attacks are fucked up, too.
I don't understand why people need to come into a thread about a tragedy and shit all over it.

It's like 'rise up in defense of the poor persecuted sharks' hour, around here. :eyes: A kid just died. Fuck.

24. "trespassing into their territory"
Why is it "their" territory?

Your post seems odd and silly. Are you claiming that humans should "naturally" stick to land?

25. Millions of sharks are caught, dragged onto boats, have their fins cut off for soup
and thrown back to drown because they can't swim with no fins. I'm really sorry for this kid and his family but there is as usual another viewpoint to the 'shark attacks human' story.

26. Yes, and how many innocent smallpox viruses died due to the imperialist patriarchal smallpox vaccine
Sorry, but there are no 'two sides' to this story.

27. I'm sorry, I don't understand that. Are you equating the killing of a virus with
rendering a living, significant part of the ecosystem unable to survive by selective mutilation for the purpose of cooking up a tasty soup? Surely I have failed to grasp the point here...?
