Please help!
I would like to ask forum members to help me with the petition urging the Tea Party supervisor of Sidney, N.Y., to resign in utter disgrace. I have previously posted the petition here on the Democratic Underground; it is being taken up in a couple of upstate New York counties on paper, and a member of the grass roots citizens group posted it online.

You do not need to be a resident of Sidney, or, for that matter, of New York or the United States, to sign the online petition.

This may seem like a local problem for people living in an isolated, insignificant town. But it is actually more: the outrage against Supervisor McCarthy's Islamophobic attack on a tiny Sufi settlement has helped to break the unity of the state-wide Tea Party. Yet, we must do more – we must crush them. And you can help.

Here is the online petition:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/impeachbobmmcarthy/

Thank you for your help.

Peace & Justice,
H2O Man

I'm having some fun working with the people from my home town. It's an interesting fix of citizens who are coming forward, and taking a stand.

In the early 1990s, when Chief Waterman and I were engaged in a similar conflict in Sidney, the then-town supervisor threatened my job in a public hearing. I had, however, already moved on to another part of the state. But I understand that it takes a spine to confront these types of thugs. And, already, the current supervisor has threatened the county's DWI Coordinator, for "daring" to disagree with him on DWI laws.

14. Thank you.
I've always been fascinated with cemeteries. When I worked in Delaware County with children and youth deemed "at risk," I organized group events where we would restore pioneer-era cemeteries. Later, in another county, I organized young adults who had severe and persistent mental illness in doing the same type of projects.

Over the decades, I've helped regional historical societies locate and identify "lost" cemeteries. And, of course, worked with Chief Waterman and the Iroquois Confederacy on burial protection and repatriation issues.

I actually understand why the opposition to protecting Indian cemeteries takes the position it does: money and greed. But McCarthy & Co took their stance in response to the proposed Islamic Center near Ground Zero. What the heck were they thinking? You know? I mean, how foolish and cruel can people be?

52. I have a project going to photograph all the stones in the
cemeteries. Sort of freezing them in time if you will. The I put the name of the cem. and the township it's in on the pic. and put them online. I've had a lot of help, some doing bits and pieces of the photographing, but it's coming along fine. Couldn't do it without digital cameras..takes the cost out of the project.

This effort has also resulted in a lot of people in the Sidney area becoming aware of DU. When we go on our speaking tour at area colleges and universities, I will be promoting this forum.

I know that the vast majority of Sidney residents want McCarthy to resign. A surprising number of republican "elders" do, too. In a strange way, I would almost rather he refuse -- the guy is stubborn -- so that we can take it to NYS Supreme Court's Appelate Division. I love legal battles.

20. Absolutely.
If it can be done in Sidney, it can be done in the next town.

The goal is to break the Tea Party. I suppose that they are helping us, by running a thug like that Paladino fellow for governor. A good court case would be perfect: not only to flush the turd out of office, but for the publicity factor. I've already told my friend who is doing the legal work that I'm good for the filing fee.

I'm doing okay. Yesterday morning, my daughter in 8th grade had her last soccer game of the season. Then the "modified" (7th & 8th grades) team can to our house. Yikes! How could they have that much energy? They ended up having lunch here, then playing the modified boys team for three hours (!), and then having a party here.

They asked me to take them for a walk to the falls, and when we got back, they had many, many questions about archeology, local history (mainly about murders!), and boxing. Then, pizza and unhealthy snacks, movies, etc. I'm sure that my wife and I must have gotten a couple hours of sleep.

They left about a half an hour ago.

I live in a city now, but I grew up in a rural area and went to school in a small town. So I think it's true that when something important happens, even in a small place, it sends out ripples through the entire world.

I'm happy to toss in my pebble. Sidney, NY is not insignificant at all. On this issue, it's the center of the universe.

Mr. McCarthy's attack on Muslims is a attack on us all.

Thanks for keeping us posted on this.

77. I think this is what he is talking about.
Leaders of Sidney, tiny upstate town, demand Muslims dig up bodies at cemetery on land they own

The leaders of a tiny upstate town some 180 miles from Ground Zero are demanding that a Muslim group dig up and remove two bodies they buried on their land.

They say the group, a Sufi religious order, is maintaining an illegal cemetery in Sidney, N.Y., - pop. 5,993.

A spokesman for the Osmanli Naksibendi Hakkani order claims the town okayed the burial ground five years ago and is singling them out now simply because they're Muslims.

"I think it's out of bigotry," said Hans Hass, who also is the head of the local EMS unit. "They don't like us being here, even though we've been here since 2002."

78. If you look
at my DU journal, I think that most of my most recent OPs are about McCarthy's actions in Sidney. The case was reported on, on Huffington Post, MSNBC's Countdown, Stephen Colbert, CNN, Fox, etc (as well as international media). McCarthy is a rabid Tea Party activist; the full petition tells about his activities other than attempting to force the Sufi people to excavate their cemetery.

89. normally I read all your journal entries as they come to my attention
The Sidney stories though seemed more like a local issue, so I wasn't that interested. It does seem like 90% of DU has cable TV, but I no longer get to watch Countdown or Colbert.

I figured I could find the story by reading maybe one or two journal entries, but also that it would be easier for you to just link to the specific issue. I tried the petition link and didn't see any reasons on the page I went to, which seems to be a signature page.

90. The petition page
is set up to allow one to access the entire petition; I think it's a blue "read more." I didn't set that up, however.

On one hand, it absolutely is a local issue. It is a small puddle in the larger scene. But, on the other hand, it is a toxic threat to the larger society, and the petition does give those from that small community (plus some out-siders, such as myself, and a number of journalists) an opportunity to help good democrats, and widen a break in the NYS Tea Party.

I haven't written all that I know about the Tea Party business, primarily because it is information a couple journalists have shared with me off the record. The two have a larger platform than I, of course, and I am confident they will address these issues in the near future. Friend Andrew Reinback of Huffington Post has already commented on some of it.

The irony is that sufis are heavily persecuted in the middle East.. They are an independent peaceful sect so the other sects constantly crap on them. Recently, one of their shrines was attacked in Pakistan with many killed. They could probably apply for asylum its so bad for their members. The Islamic Center in Manhattan that people are hysterical about is also a Sufi sect, not the fundamentalist type at all. Opponents are ignorant, simply stupid to confuse these people with any generic Muslim.

79. Right.
Some of the local paranoid types say, "But the FBI and State Police have been to the Sufi farm!" One of my friends, a top AP reporter, spoke to the investigators from both agencies who have been there. She was told that they have to respond, when called, and that they find the Sufi settlement poses No danger to anyone. In fact, they've found that the Sufi people visit and bring meals to the shut-in elderly in the area.

I know the farmers in that area -- worked the farms as a teen and young man -- and they all have a very high opinion of the Sufi people. I considr these farmers to be good judges of character.

I'd really like to help you bring down these disgusting evil pieces of shit! Have you thought about starting a Facebook group about this campaign? If you aren't a Facebooker I could help set it up and run it...

I'm an expat living in Indonesia and I'm not sure whether to say that's my country or not, what do you think?
