Here's A Chart Showing What a Tiny Portion of NPR's Funding Comes From The Government

NPR's revenue comes primarily from fees paid by our member stations, contributions from corporate sponsors, institutional foundation grants, gifts from major donors, and fees paid by users of The Public Radio Satellite System. We receive no direct federal funding for operations. The largest share of NPR's revenue comes from program fees and station dues paid by member stations that broadcast NPR programs.

2. I have heard that it is only 2%-6%. The repukes make it sound like it is totally funded
by the govt.

Actually, the corporate funding, "sponsorship" / "partners", is what pisses me off....

13. They have no idea. They also think NPR survives due to a large donation from George Soros
but have no idea that they also received a huge endowment from Doris Duke after she died and another from the widow of McDonald's.

6. That one is worth checking out as well
I posted the NPR one as it's the one they're publicly aiming at, even though they really want to take ALL public radio down one way or another.

5. How's this for a great idea:
Let the righties SUCCEED at stopping the govt funding for NPR. Then "we" take over NPR. Let Soros buy it. Put Phil Donahue and Bill Press in as the head of it. Let the tilt be totally progressive. Then the stupid pubbies will howl with indignation when they find out what they've done.

9. Notice in the paragraph you posted,
"we receive no direct federal funding for operations."

Wikipedia says the same thing: "NPR receives no direct funding from the federal government" (although it lists NPR's FAQ's as it's source).

So, let the federal government cut it's non-existent funding.

10. I noticed that and scratched my head a bit
Can they get indirect federal funding? If so, how and from who?

17. No direct federal funding
What NPR means is that there is no Congressional budget line that allocates money directly to NPR.

The federal government funds the Corporation For Public Broadcasting which in turn gives NPR about 3% of their yearly operating budget.

The CPB also provides grants to local public radio stations, some of which are NPR member stations. Usually about 10% of a local public radio station's budget comes from the CPB.

The NPR member stations then buy programming from NPR (All Things Considered, Morning Edition, etc.), thus some small percentage of the money the member stations get from the CPB flows to NPR via this route. It amounts to about another 3%-4% of NPR's total budget.

So no, NPR is not funded directly by the federal government. All of the taxpayer dollars they get come in indirectly via either the CPB or NPR member stations.

11. I hate to tell you folks this....
But the percentage is a lot more than what shows up on the chart.

Every donation to NPR is tax deductible.

So that means there is an incentive for people and corporations to donate to NPR and PBS and that incentive comes from the federal government.

If that incentive was removed, there would be a drastic drop in sponsorship.

I just don't understand why everyone on the right is so upset about Juan Williams. He is a hack who should have been let go a long time ago from NPR. He is a self promoting ideologue and tainted the network right from the get go.

It hasn't been the same since. Just the fact that Juan Williams EVER had a job there is a prime indication of the direction it has taken. If it was ever effective, it has had almost all its teeth extracted...

You really want to hear some truth? Listen to your local Pacifica station.

the local programming, including 'this american life' and 'wait, wait don't tell me' is the greatest. 'worldview' is the greatest international affairs program on radio, and has been for 20~ years.

the others may be as well. I'm not as familiar with them as TAL.
