3. I could name a program they are willing to cut - veteran's benefits |
|
At least they already voted to do so once.
and health care for children
and education - they voted to cut that
and highway repair - they voted against money for that too.

10. I like to stick with veterans, children and schools though |
|
and roads. Because huge majorities of the public support those things. Particularly in Kansas. If I tell a Kansas audience that the Republican Congresspeople cut veteran's benefits, lots of them will get angry at the Republicans for that. Same thing with health care for kids. Schools and roads are hugely popular too, but the EPA is not. Not in Kansas. If I tell the same crowd that the Republicans want to disband the EPA maybe a majority of the crowd is gonna say "good for the Republicans".

25. Mirror the UK's defense cuts - percentage for percentage. |
|
IIRC 25% over four years.
It can be done. My guess is because of the infrastructure expenditure that is happening that the cuts can be made without reducing the number of people employed by the Dept of Defense, though I'd prefer that groups like USAID and Peace Corps get a big government budget and re-deploy a number of military personnel to these organizations.
I don't know how many civilians are supported by military spending doing what they believe to be worthwhile and useful work. That's the problem I hate with any reduction in any governmental programs - governments support jobs through tax dollars and if the government employees are losing their jobs just as bad as the private sector, and if there is no private sector to fill the void, unemployment goes up.
I'd say a whole government restructuring and spending review is necessary. At all levels: federal, state and local government. If there is a fiscal crisis, someone in leadership needs to come out with balls and state "We are in the fiscal shitter and we got to do something about it now. Raise taxes, cut costs, use what money we have more efficiently".
Sorry if it makes me speak like a conservative, but with finances I'd be happy to be given that label. However at the same time the most vulnerable in society need to be protected. Instead of foreclosure, how about mortgages to rent programs? Rent assistance for those who have been devastated (boost Section 8 funding) ?? I say health care reform is a "good start" but doesn't go far enough. Ensure our veterans get the proper treatment and are not short changed. Ramp up programs to reduce homelessness drastically. Expand "Food Stamps" to a "Living Allowance" - Food Stamps plus money to pay for essential household bills, and for transportation in the hope of getting to work and back. Money to get more students into schools without worry of where the money is going to come from, even if it means giving private universities money to administer scholarships to get decent people a private university education to those who need it.
Rant over.

Probably.
Olberman several times mentioned the Pledge did not specify what they would cut.... beyond not including "essential" programs.

31. I believe I have heard that question |
|
on the Sunday morning show with the guy with dark hair and a pointy nose. He kept asking the question politely but whomever the Grandiose Obstructionist Party member he was "interviewing", the question was never answered. Couldn't tell you when that was it was quite a while ago. Of course, I could have imagined the whole thing.
