Hollywood actor fears he's on a 'death list' of stars - Randy Quaid and wife seek asylum in Canada
Source: The Independent (UK)

Sunday, October 24 2010.

Randy Quaid, the American actor famous for playing characters as diverse as the trailer-trash scrounger in the National Lampoon series to his nation's saviour in Independence Day, is at the centre of a real-life drama more bizarre than anything the movies ever cooked up for him. He and his wife are claiming asylum in Canada because, in her words, they fear they are on a Hollywood "death list".

The couple were arrested in Vancouver after police responded to a call and found there were warrants out for them in California. The couple told the immigration adjudicator that they are being persecuted in the United States. Evi Quaid begged a Canadian immigration adjudicator not to force them to return, saying that friends, such as the actors David Carradine and Heath Ledger, had been "murdered" under mysterious circumstances and she was worried something would happen to her husband next. "We feel our lives are in danger," she said. "Randy has known eight close friends murdered in odd, strange manners... We feel that we're next."

During a break in the proceedings, the Quaids' lawyer, Brian Tsuji, approached the media to read a single-sentence statement from the Quaids. "We are requesting asylum from Hollywood star-whackers," he read, declining further comment on the mental state of his clients. Randy Quaid, 60, complained he had been persecuted for 20 years.

Despite objections from border officials, the couple were freed on C$10,000 (£6,200) cash bond until another hearing next Thursday. The Quaids, who said they needed to prepare their case and care for their puppy, hugged when the decision was announced.

1. i'm wondering about the warrants issued in ca & found this:
"A Santa Barbara judge issued arrest warrants for Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, on Monday after both were no-shows at a court hearing stemming from their arrests in September for allegedly squatting in their old home, the Associated Press reports.

"Santa Barbara Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter said $50,000 warrants were issued after the couple failed to appear for an arraignment on a felony vandalism charge. The case will be called again on October 26, though the couple can turn themselves in sooner.

"The pair was arrested last month on suspicion of living in the guesthouse of a Montecito home they previously owned. They're accused of causing more than $5,000 worth of damage.

"This isn't the first time the Quaids have skipped a court appearance. They made headlines earlier this year when they skipped several court hearings after being charged with defrauding an innkeeper. Evi ended up pleading no contest while charges against the actor were dropped.

4. They are both behaving bizarrely. Defrauding an innkeeper was bad enough, but returning...

... to town and squatting in someone's guesthouse was kind of deranged.

I'm sure the tabs are having fun with this, but it really raises issues about what their financial status is, and especially what their combined mental state is. Evi looks like she's lost a bunch of weight this year and is looking strained, yet her hubby looks pretty cheerful for a man in as much trouble as he is.

2. Someone Needs a Mental Evaluation
It's looking like the Quaids need to speak to a psych doctor. Hollywood death list??? Please, you're acting put you on a death list, not people who want to harm you.

5. More info please
We all know that things can be twisted by those that want to destroy someone. Maybe they are crazy or maybe they have been a target. I say we need to find out before we prosecute someone in the news. I hope someone investigates. If it is a targeted smear campaign, we need to know.

11. Thank you! I hate the way people rush to judgement on the basis a news account...
...as if we could trust the news! I don't trust the news even when someone is convicted--let alone merely accused. There are too many false convictions. There is too much injustice in our so-called justice system. And there are too many oppressive laws.

And I'd sure like to know why government resources are being wasted on hunting down people who are wanted for squatting! That is absurd.

Yours and the one upthread by "Just One Woman" are the ONLY rational post in this thread... Viewing the knee-jerk naivete of DU posters in some of these threads is depressing.

Thank you!

16. Why would The Independent (UK) go out of their way to "smear" Randy Quaid, of all people?
Edited on Sun Oct-24-10 01:41 PM by Turborama
They're a well respected newspaper and their reporting on this wasn't "prosecuting" them.

Also, if you want more info, Google is your friend: http://www.google.com/search?q=Randy+Quaid&num=100&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&prmd=nilvfdo&source=univ&tbs=nws:1&tbo=u&ei=qH3ETL6PE4HRceaw6MwN&sa=X&oi=news_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CDoQqAIwAA

30. Good point. Since it's been local news for me, I've gone by my local news sources
Since the original charges of defrauding an innkeeper were filed, they've missed at least 4 court dates.
As for the charges of squatting and vandalism -- they sold that house in 1994! :wtf:

(skip the comments, which remind me of DU, and go to items labeled "Story")

I haven't followed the story much -- it's just there, and there again and again. The mug shots from last year are different from this year -- he grew a white beard, and she's lost a lot of weight and looks hollow-eyed and strained. Something is really wrong with this picture, but beyond that I can't speculate.

ever since he was kidnapped by aliens, he hasn't been quite right in the head. I think they may have even sexually abused him. However, I still think he has the potential to be a hero and make his sons proud of him.

Maybe a National Lampoon film, starring Randy Quaid and the other members of the extended Griswold family.

Dog the Bounty Hunter reaches out to Randy Quaid; won't hunt down actor
Duane Chapman: "I want to hear the story"

By Dean Broughton, Vancouver Sun October 23, 2010

VANCOUVER - Duane Chapman, aka Dog the Bounty Hunter, won't come to Vancouver to hunt down Randy Quaid and his wife Evi. However, he is reaching out to the embattled actor.

"I want to hear the story," said Chapman. "We've heard he's out. It is a good opportunity. I want to talk to him."

Chapman has never heard of the "star whackers" which Evi referred to in a note from her lawyer Friday. She alleged the "star whackers" were responsible for the deaths of Heath Ledger and David Carradine.

"That is the first time I heard about it," he said. "Something is wrong here and we need to find out."

Chapman referred to Quaid's family as being "morally sound"

"This is not like him," said Chapman. "Something is up and we need to get to the bottom of it."

That's the problem with those porous borders ... we get more loons from the U.S. up here claiming refugee status than most people have any idea of. When I was in practice, other lawyers and various social agencies (including my own political party's office) would send them to me.
