I once got slammed in a thread for referring to my daughter as a "kid". That kid or the kid, or however I used it...

As a teacher I might say that Johnny is a great kid, but I would not say that your kid is doing well in math.

If the little one is well mannered and well behaved, I call them a child.

If they are not, well see my other choices above.
