New LAT/USC Poll: Jerry Brown's Lead Doubles; Boxer Keeps 8-Pt. Edge

LOS ANGELES TIMES/USC POLL

Jerry Brown's lead doubles in a month; little change in Senate race
Meg Whitman's handling of housekeeper scandal and record-breaking spending have cost her support among women, Latinos and independents. Barbara Boxer maintains an 8-point lead over Carly Fiorina.

By Cathleen Decker, Los Angeles Times
October 24, 2010|5:00 a.m.

Defections from Meg Whitman's ranks on the part of women, Latinos and nonpartisan voters have fueled a surge by Jerry Brown in the race for governor, according to a new Los Angeles Times/USC poll.
<snip>

Brown, the Democratic attorney general and former governor, led Whitman 52% to 39% among likely voters, the poll found. His advantage has more than doubled since a Times/USC poll in September.

The abrupt movement in the race for governor came as Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer held onto her 8-point margin over Republican Carly Fiorina in the U.S. Senate contest. Boxer's 50% to 42% lead was statistically unchanged from September's 51% to 43% edge.

For both Democrats, the month between the two polls found the party's strongest supporters rallying to the candidates' sides: liberals, women and Latinos either solidified or expanded their backing for Brown and Boxer. Nonpartisan voters, whom Republicans had counted on to overcome the Democratic advantage in voter registration, moved away from the two Republican candidates, and moderate voters also tilted toward the Democrats.

So much for that 'enthusiasm gap.'

3. I know how you feel, but this actually is a pretty good one
To avoid the kind of bias we see in so many others, they use both a Republican and a Democratic polling firm. I think this is one of the most highly-respected polls out there.

8. The political ads are displacing the commercial sponsors
In the High Desert it seems like it's nothing but Whitman and Fiorina ads all the time.

Boxer and Brown are stepping it up lately, and their ads seem very effective. That Brown ad (called 'Echoes') shows Whitman parroting exactly the same things Schwarzenegger said, word-for-word. And Boxer's ad showing HP employees or former employees telling what they think of Fiorina is great!

There's a backlash to Meg's record spending. One of the CA papers had a headline recently asking if Whitman is spending her way to defeat, LOL!

14. This is not the time to get too cocky....and let her spend
it's good for the economy! How ANYONE ever considered her a viable candidate is amazing. A person who didn't vote for almost 30 years???? ..........then of course there is the housekeeper/nanny thing.

16. I'm more concerned about the Senate race
Meg-a-Millions can only screw up California a little more than it is now: Fiorina has the potential of harming the whole country.

One of the polls had Boxer's lead slimming from 7 points to to 2 points. The LAT/USC poll may be more accurate, but I'm not taking any chances. I'm heading to Boxer's Hollywood campaign office this week to see what help they need there. I made another donation to Barbara yesterday, but Fiorina's pouring more money into her campaign and the CoC and other deep-pocketed outside groups are going all-out to help her.

Boxer's campaign manager sent out this message Saturday:

(Excerpt)

Thursday, we learned that Fiorina recently wrote her campaign a $250,000 check.

Then yesterday, Fiorina announced she was pouring in an additional $1,000,000 -- and we know she could still dump in much, much more.

After relying on shadowy right-wing front groups and special interests like the Chamber of Commerce to run millions of dollars in attack ads against Barbara, now Fiorina's dipping back into her deep pockets to try to buy this Senate seat here at the end.

19. Now there's more reason for optimism
But, while Jerry seems safe, Barbara's race could shift either way in these final days--especially with all the money being pumped in by "outside groups" to attack Boxer.

This is one of those cases in which we count our momentary blessings--and redouble our efforts.

21. The latest I read is that Boxer is leading her opponent by 8%,
and Jerry Brown leads his opponent by 13%. I wish the same could be
said for some of the other states.
