BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG BY MARK KARLIN
There's a political cliche that Pennsylvania is a state with Pittsburgh on the west, Philadelphia on the east - and Alabama in between.
Last night, I was driving through central PA headed toward New York, getting exposed to the full monty of right-wing radio as stations drifted in and out of range. There's nothing but darkness, passing headlights and the hint of mountains, nothing but lunatic voices that would be deemed psychotic in any other age.
Take Michael Savage, for instance. In between commercials for how "easy" it is to make $8,000 a month working from home, how gold will make you a millionaire and a brand of vitamins will prolong your life, Savage went on a rant about the Juan Williams NPR firing. He claimed that he had information on the head of NPR that no one else had: she majored in "Soviet" studies at Cornell, was a Russian interpreter for CNN, edited the New York Times' web site - and when he put the dots together, it explained her turning NPR into a Soviet propaganda satellite. Say what?
Then Savage went on to accuse "the left" and the head of NPR of being fascists, which is quite a feat, being part of a Soviet conspiracy (when there is no longer a Soviet Union) and - at the same time - being fascist. Savage pronounced Williams a victim of leftist-Soviet-fascism because Williams didn't have a chance to make his case. Excuse me, but what happened to free-market indifference to a boss's prerogative to fire anyone at will and tell the unemployed that they are crybabies? And Williams got a $2 million contract on FOX out of the deal!
