Julian Assange appreciation thread
Julian Assange is the editor-in-chief at WikiLeaks, and apparently has final say in what gets released.

As far as I'm concerned, this guy is a true American hero. More courageous than most, dedicated to truth and human rights. A true patriot.

I think we owe him so much respect and appreciation.

Thank you Julian for what you do, and all that you stand for.

Please recommend the thread if you agree.

though it is interesting that his detractors make the very same sorts of arguments and behave in much the same way as some people did 40 years or so ago with American Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers.

87. I think what's especially trailblazing about Mr. Assange
Edited on Tue Oct-26-10 02:25 AM by heliarc
Is the fact that his organization is multinational... utilizing the same position of power as a company like Halliburton (with offices in Dubai and tendrils worldwide)... the absence of national locus provides him the ultimate legal protection from the nation states and corporations who are the target of his journalistic mission.

Truly brilliant and inspiring bit of strategy. Thank you for your work Assange

Years ago the NYT published the Pentagon Papers.
We had 60 Minutes doing investigative work.
We had Cronkite on the CBS Evening News.

Now that all corporate news outlets have been co-opted by the State/Wall Street,
we need guys like Assange to pull back the curtain.

Wikileaks provides a platform that allows the truth to come out. Well, maybe not "the" truth, but parts of the truth that would remain hidden if the powers that be had their way.

As they say, sunlight is the best disinfectant. Hats off to you, Julian. Stay safe.

29. Very much appreciate what he is doing.
How many would risk what he has risked to get the truth out? I suspect many in our MSM knew a lot of what is being revealed in the documents, but would not publish anything that might get them in trouble.

Ashley Banfield was fired in this country simply for making a speech explaining that what they showed on TV did not come close to describing what happened AFTER the bombs fell. That was enough to get her fired.

After all over $300 million dollars was spent on the Rendon Group to sell these 'glorious' wars, so anyone exposing the propaganda is clearly an 'enemy'.

People very badly need to get behind Wikileaks, from all over the world, it is the only hope the world has of ever having the truth be revealed about corrupt governments everywhere.

49. Wikileaks needs to be more careful protecting names...
Several human rights organizations have made statements that Wikileaks needs to be more careful redacting names from the documents being released.

From a previous post here on DU:

Erica Gaston, program officer for OSI's Afghanistan-Pakistan regional policy initiative, said: "Our concern was that the Taliban had announced it was going through the data looking for names and that it would begin targeting that. It's a very real threat that they're making. They have demonstrated over and over that if they have the name of someone that has in any way been affiliated with the international community, they will find them, they will kill them in most cases."

Read more: http://online.wsj.com/article/EUROPE_WSJ_PUB:SB10001424...

Holding our government accountable for their mistakes and cover ups should be commended. Leaving names in those documents resulting in the deaths of others, not to be applauded.

50. Wikileaks gave the Military an opportunity to remove names of
anyone they thought might be in danger from the release. The military wasn't interested.

Maybe that message ought to be sent to the military instead of Wikileaks. Next time they are given the opportunity to save lives, they ought to take it.

However, again with these releases, the Pentagon has said they are 'not concerned' as they did last time, until it became obvious they could use it to slam Wikeleaks and distract from THEIR crimes.

Sorry, but that responsibility lies with the Military, and they refused to accept it.

They are responsible, this Government, for every death in these wars. Attempts to shift the blame simply make them look desperate. They ought to stand up and take responsibility for what they have done.

... you know what really endangers peoples lives? Invading their country and bombing the shit out of them.

Little Mustafa is not going to hate the US because he read somewhere (never mind that internet connectivity is basically non existent over there) that his dad was killed by American-paid mercenaries, little Mustafa is going to not really like us very much because he was THERE for the events that led to his daddy's funeral.

These documents do nothing to increase the hatred the locals feel towards invading troops, because THEY LIVE THAT REALITY EVERY SINGLE DAY. The release of these documents, however, make it increasingly difficult for the US and its allies to gather support for this war once that people who do not live its reality get exposed to the facts. Ironic how some people have their concern fit exactly with the interests of the American administration d'jour, all out of pure "misplaced" coincidence. I am sure.

If we care ever so deeply about the safety of people, here is a concept: let's not endanger our kids by sending them there, and let's not bomb the shit out the natives.

We are a desperate species right now. The world seems to be in the hands of
psychopaths who are full of greed and selfishness. They only way their lock
on our world is melted--is if courageous heroes like Assange come forward and
do the right thing.

We need whistle blowers and truth tellers who will take tremendous risks. It's
sad that it's come to this. But it is what it is.

I am eternally grateful to Assange. I can only imagine what he endures on a daily
