Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) leads his Republican opponent by 13 percent with eight days left in the campaign.
Forty-six percent of likely voters in Massachusetts's 4th congressional district have said they would vote to reelect Frank, while 33 percent said they'd support GOP candidate Sean Bielat, according to a new University of New Hampshire survey, conducted for The Boston Globe.
Eleven percent said they were undecided, while 10 percent of likely voters said they'd back someone else.
The poll provides a snapshot of what Republicans' efforts to unseat Frank have managed in the Democratic-leaning district. Conservative activists, who have long maintained a strong distaste for Frank, have poured millions into the race to support Bielat, who's been bolstered by GOP headwinds this election cycle.
Bielat's also benefitted from numerous appearances on platforms like Fox News and favorable profiles by conservative media outlets, which have shifted national attention toward the race.
Frank loaned his own campaign $200,000 to add insurance against the millions that have poured into the race on his challenger's behalf. But the poll shows Bielat still has a lot of ground to make up if he wants to pull off the upset of the 15-term lawmaker, especially with limited days still left in the campaign.
To that end, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report still rates the race as a "likely Democratic" retention, driven by the strong Democratic edge in the district.
The poll, conducted Oct. 17-22, has a 5 percent margin of error.
