My editorial on "Obamacare" printed today
http://www.thedailylight.com/articles/2010/10/25/opinion/doc4cc5b40f289a6495672236.txt

Recent editorials on “Obamacare” have been quick to dismiss the current health care reimbursement system, but fail to offer any alternatives. Alternatives DO exist, and the nation would be a better place if we were to implement them.

Before discussing health care in Texas, here are a few facts. According to The Kaiser Foundation, six million people under the age of 64 have no health insurance in Texas. Another three million Texans have Medicaid and two million Texans have Medicare (government-run entities). This places us at last place in the United States. Our teen birth rate (ages 15-19) is 64 births per 1,000 teens, placing us at the second-highest in the United States. The number of infant deaths in Texas was 2,598 deaths in 2007 (one-tenth of the nation’s). Sixty-seven percent of Texas children have access to health care, making us-again-50th in the nation.

House Bill 646 would have provided health and dental care for all citizens. It would have assured fair reimbursement for all physicians. It would have stressed preventative health and dental care for all citizens, ultimately decreasing the ever-climbing health care costs. It was endorsed by Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman as ultimately reducing health care spending by one billion dollars. Sadly, HB 646-even though it was supported by over 70 percent of Americans-fell to the wayside in Congress.

Further research on universal health care should be done before jumping on the Tea Party bandwagon. Physicians for a National Health Plan has an excellent resource on the specifics involved in single-payer plans.

Please educate yourselves before coming to a conclusion on universal health care. Our neighbors and friends are suffering.

8. The objections
are based on rights, not numbers. We have to get people to change their minds about rights before the numbers will have an effect.
