Homeless S.I. Woman Gets $10,000 Surprise From NY State
Edited on Mon Oct-25-10 09:54 PM by Renew Deal
A Staten Island woman who was once homeless got a big surprise Thursday when she learned there was money just sitting in a bank waiting for her.

Penny Martin was living in a homeless shelter when she learned that a man she had dated when she was a teenager left her $10,000.

She found out about the money when a representative from the Office of Unclaimed Funds in the State Comptroller's office visited her job in Saint George.

"I remember this man saying to me that, 'If anything happens to me I just want you to know that you are going to be my beneficiary.' And I was young I didn't have the slightest clue what this person was talking about, but when you get older and you start working and paying bills money stays on your mind," Martin said.

State Senator Diane Savino's office helped her reclaim the money.

The comptroller's office says there is about $10 billion in unclaimed funds sitting in a state bank account.

Anyone who thinks they may have unclaimed funds should visit osc.state.ny.us

I know multiple people that have found money this way. There's all kinds of ways money ends up here including uncashed work checks.

1. I love stuff like this
The other day a woman in Georgia won the Power Ball lottery. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the details - I don't buy lottery tickets. What I did get from the blip I saw was that she needed it. Of course, it was HUGE so I hope she would share with others who are in similar dire straits. Hell, how much is enough? Can't take it with ya.
