To recap, the NYP reported today: "Claims by Republican Carl Paladino's campaign that he commanded 250 men at Fort Bliss, Texas, during six months of active Army service in 1971 are false, The Post has found. Paladino's campaign manager, Michael Caputo, admitted the contentions were wrong after The Post obtained military records showing the Buffalo builder was on active duty for only three months, and was at Fort Bliss for training as a newly commissioned officer in the late summer of 1971, while the Vietnam War was raging..."
Paladino Campaign Manager Michael Caputo, as he has before during other Paladino times of trouble, blamed himself for misspeaking on the issue, and Paladino himself addressed it during an appearance on Fox's "Good Day New York," saying he trained men during his summer service as a reservist 40 years ago but was released early from active duty.
Democratic frontrunner Andrew Cuomo's campaign quickly latched onto the controversy via a statement from spox Josh Vlasto that said, in part, “Given their hostility to facts, Mr. Paladino and his puppeteer Caputo appear to be engaged in a race to see whose nose can grow longer. More importantly, they are revealing troubling insights into Mr. Paladino’s character that further disqualify his candidacy. With claims about his military record now exposed as false, Mr. Paladino must explain what inspired him to tell the NY Times that his military experience showed him that people from low income backgrounds needed to be taught how to ‘clean themselves daily and brush their teeth twice a day.’"

But the story also stirred black leaders to question Paladino -- as they have in the past -- about his Dignity Corps program, which would employ underutilized prisons to provide job and "hygiene" training for the unemployed.
