Many people in this country have no idea what fascism is. The also do not understand socialism or any other political system. They think that capitalism and communism are political systems. Socialism is also an economic system, but people do not understand the difference between political systems and economic system. Democracy, monarchy, dictatorship, a republic, or oligarchy, are political systems that describe the way governments in countries work. These political systems can be combined with economic systems. The United States is a republic that has had an economic system of combines capitalism and socialism since the mid 20th century. The nature of our political system, a republic, determines how these economic systems operate in our country. As a republic, we have government regulation of capitalism and socialism. Socialism is an important part of our economy because we, at our best, feel an obligation to take care of the needy in our society.
A different political system will use these economic systems in a different way. Fascism, since that is what we are discussing here, will allow unfettered capitalism and show no regard for the needy members of our society. Fascism uses the needy or those who are not in control of the state to enrich and empower the powerful leaders and corporate barons.
In my opinion, part of the problem is ignorance. People use the terms socialism, communism, democracy, etc. and have no idea what they mean.
The Tea Party scares me because of their ignorance and fear mongering. They scare me because they are willing to sell out their country and its inherent values for a false sense of security. I agree that they are courting and supporting the rise of fascism. They are dangerous and their ignorance, as usual, is not an acceptable excuse.
One more thing, they are not the only ones. People who should know better, because they are in powerful positions in our country such as sitting members of congress, senators, Supreme Court Justices or governors to name a few are also taking the country down this road. I cannot necessarily attribute their behavior to ignorance. Their motive may be greed.
I do know the lies and fear mongering are dangerous. I just hope none of these ignorant, greedy, misguided people win election to public office next week.
